Permanent Vacation

Mom is a little jealous. It is kind of like we’re on a permanent vacation. Except we know it just might, someday, end. Today is not that day. Yesterday we toured every outskirt of Seattle that we’d seen from the boat to find the parks and ‘beaches’. We saw an ice cream truck, giants, and a lady that sings to the geese. Loudly. We found a State Park with a heated indoor pool and indoor tennis courts. And more beaches. I stuck my toes in the water and decided I certainly have not lived up north long enough to remember that I used to swim at Old Orchard Beach in Maine, which I think was around 45 degrees in August.

I am now fairly bronzed, and this morning treated myself to a pedicure, something I had sworn off in an effort to reduce my spending, but they’re less that 20$ here, so why not give it a go? I was a little nervous that the cheapness would result in toe fungus, and prepared to run off mid polish in necessary. However, it was even better here than in Austin. I was divinely pampered.

Lakes Washington And Union; Hooters And Horns

We rented a boat yesterday to check out some of the fair waterways we now find ourselves surrounded by. Not sure what the real temperature ever is around here, I had shorts, tanks, sweats, and a rain coat, just in case. Luckily, it was fairly warm. The views of Mt. Rainier and Seattle from Lake Washington are spectacular. We gawked at most of the houses, this one had a ROCK CLIMBING wall, can you believe that?

The only thing stranger than any body of water I’ve ever been on is the constant landing and taking off of seaplanes. You never can tell where they’re headed until they’re NEAR you. Yikes.

After a power workout we headed back out to South Lake Union. On Tuesdays they have sailing races that you can watch. It was amazing to see how many sail boats were out there.

After watching for a while, we headed out to Lock Spot Cafe to see if any one famous from the Deadliest Catch was going to show up for the finale…and passed by a Hooters. With Longhorn signs all over. Upon further inquiry, we learned it’s Texas Exes central during football season. More importantly, they kick off the season by SHIPPING UP BBQ and throwing a big party.
Only 72 days, 23 hours, 43 minutes to go…

Photo Limits = Grouchy Blogger

Talk about frustrating. I was all about this flickr thing, and had organized all my pictures and started to upload them. So now, I’m trying snapfish.

sfish.jpg
I should be going backwards to add to the appropriate posts, but then I bet that you wouldn’t even look at them:

Flickr – Seattle Memorial Day Weekend – that’s the pics that are cute but are not Sasquatch from when everyone was here. I’ve added some more recently.

Snapfish – Sasquatch – I bet you can figure out what those are. There’s no place for explanations, but they’re either of us, the music, or the view…

Snapfish – Fremont Fair – this is for the post I never wrote. It would have gone a little like this:

Maybe 78704 is Austin style hippie, but Fremont is pretty far out there too. The parade is to celebrate the ‘Soulstice’, so there’s a parade of nekkid bicyclers, and then a huge parade of more stuff that makes even less sense. If it looks a little strange, that’s because nothing could be motorized or not recyclable. Earth friendly parade. It was certainly the most crowded event that I’ve been to in Seattle, and very interesting. You can see the one picture of a crowded street, and there was also a car show of strange cars. The clouds towards the end of the afternoon looked like rain so I headed home instead of to the end celebration at Gas Works Park, but I had seen plenty.

Hope you enjoy!!

Ode For The Day, Dad Style

If I was a young, handsome dude, and got married, and then had my first baby, and it was a girl, a too big for her own britches loud crazy girl, I don’t know what I would do. Here’s what my Dad did: Set me straight and knocked me off my high horse and taught me humility and respect. That’s what makes him awesome. That and teaching me about sports. And cars. And other Dad stuff. Call your Dad this Father’s Day, if you can, kiss him. Even if he hates kisses. Or put up a terrible blog and picture, if that’s all you’ve got. 😉

First Time For Everything

Oh, what a night. Here are the highlights.

Friday night, CD picked me up straight off the ferry and we made our way over to the Old Pequliar. I have to say, I have been to more pubs in this city than any, ever. There are so many. There’s one guy coming to visit me that is going to be very, very happy to hear that. Anyway, there were a ton of people there. And a cowboy. The cowboy wasn’t with us, but he (besides his pants) was cute. So us girls, we talked about him. A lot. Since I’m the married one, it fell upon my shoulders to go hand him a phone number of one of the other girls. He wasn’t very cowboy, he was from CA. After living in TX, I think somehow that’s the only place they really come from. That about rapped that up for me.

Anyway, we proceed to play darts, my team winning 3 of 4 games. When the party dies down a little, we relocate to Belltown, a bar called the Black Bottle. I don’t know why these things don’t happen when MK’s here, but CD was hit on big time. Or something.

By a drag queen.

Not that there’s anything wrong with that…

Right. I have to cross watching that off my “I never” list.

If that wasn’t odd enough, there was also my first conversation with a real live LA hipster, Indian. Between the sentences “You shut up” and “Don’t go there” he talked about the weather. Yikes. There might have been a couple “No you didn’t”s, I didn’t know people still said that.

CD also had the fortune of meeting a couple whose main features were “he drives a Porsche” “this is our first date” “no, we’re married” and “this time I don’t think he’s going to hit me”. Where do these people come from?

CD also got to learn my special secret after a night out drinking, when we returned to my place, and I made spaghetti.

Let’s Play “Is It Creepy?”

There are not that many residential buildings near me. There are mostly offices in all directions, expect due south, where my windows all look. Last night (Mom’s not pleased I told my blog stalkers I was home alone!) I of course was enjoying my freedom dancing through the house in my underwear drinking and smoking and wearing face cream (only one of those is the truth…) and I could see out the window! My senses seemed more acute than ever, and well, I saw TV’s on and surely other things that my imagination has been running wild with all day long.

This leads to only one conclusion, of course, “Should I get a telescope and spy on these people even better?” I mean, if they’re leaving their windows all the way open they’re asking for it, right? In many non dirty ways, it just made me laugh. And think of Google Earth, what with the nose picking and other unassuming things I might be privy to. So, internet, is it creepy that I want to spy on people with a telescope? I’m sure it is, especially since telescopes are expensive, and I don’t like the thought of peering into a room with a dude with a telescope of his own, then hearing the phone ring…

I guess what I really want to do, and leave it at, would be the talk with the salesperson in the Sharper Image. “Which one of these can I see into that building over there with?”

Too Easy Not To

According to Litlove, I can say whatever I want in this ‘7 things about writing’ meme.

  1. I first decided I wanted to write a book in Mrs. Thompson’s class. I won the spelling bee, and my prize was a copy of A Tree Grows in Brooklyn. Not only was I Francie Nolan, but I could write like that book was written, I presumed. I’ve since read that book at least a dozen times. For inspiration. And because it’s a freaking good book.
  2. I wrote for the high school poetry club, and also was the editor of whatever you call the dumb excuse for a paper they had. My prized editorial was about drunk driving, my Mom might have it somewhere. NOT quality.
  3. I was published in the local paper as well, in an editorial. (This is practically chronological). Seeing my name and written words in print gave me a feeling it’s not appropriate I blog about.
  4. I believe wholeheartedly that Emerson is the best writer I’ve had the fortune to read.
  5. The hardest part of the 60,000-some words of my novel wasn’t getting it all down the first time, or even making concepts clear, but knowing what to cut and what to keep. I can edit with the best of them, but it’s hard to know when to let it go sometimes. You can’t be too obvious, but you can be redundant. What a fine line.
  6. Other art inspires good art. Listening to music is key in my writing process, to inspire.
  7. It follows that writers also inspire other writers. Writers on writing is food for my soul as well as my fingertips. Listening to those with past and present success convince, teach, and persuade me to have my own.

Pho Bac

There’s been some drama with me trying to eat at Pho Bac, since every time I’ve gone, it’s never been open. Granted maybe I shouldn’t go super late, or super super late, or on Monday. Everything around here seems to be closed on Mondays, I should know better. MK hates Pho, and so I was looking forward to taking RD, but that didn’t work out (super late). Today, the MIL left town via bus, and it just so happens Pho Bac is located, one block away from me, in the Greyhound Bus Terminal. I can’t explain that one for you…

Anyway, I took some spring rolls and pho to go, and am still living in bliss, with a giant tummy full of warm yummy noodle soup. It IS the best in Seattle, and I am one happy camper. Worth the wait.

The place was completely full, every table and a line for to go pickup as well, and since MK is out of town for the weekend, if you can’t find me, this might be where I am!
