On Second Thought

Most of you should know about MK’s forced vacation by now, if you don’t, well, you’ll have to ask somebody. We’ve hit that super loving spot of needing to spend some serious time apart. So, in the height of his awesomeness, MK finally got started on his new hobby, and spent the weekend with an instructor learning how to sail a boat. I, to be sure, was all for this new hobby in concept. We can charter a boat without a crew, even buy one without me worrying who’s going to work it.

I’m envisioning all these fantastic moments:

Then, however, I flip through some of his manuals. MK informs me, when he cranks it to top speed or whatever, he could fall off the boat and I will have to know how to sail back and get him. (Or some other silly scenario that makes me have to work). Gone is my bikini and mimosa, suddenly I’m all geared up.

MK had me all set to suggest we buy a giant catamaran and live on it for years to come, but that was when the only schooling I was going to have to do was to read about provisioning (easy: spaghetti every night). That was when I was entertainer, lounge model, person in charge of relaxation. Now, we go shopping and he’s suggesting deck hands gloves and adventure pants. Usually with any new hobby we attempt, it’s the shopping for a whole ‘hobby specific’ wardrobe that gets me excited. Boating gear is not as alluring as I had imagined.

Awesomest Trip

We decided to drive up the coast this weekend. We’d gotten as far as Laguna before and turned inland, and really wanted to finally see LA. I was jumping up and down all morning while MK worked, all hyped up on Diet Dr.P. It was high time we had our little coast party weekend.

Our first stop was in Huntington Beach. We parked by the pier and checked out the Farmer’s Market, the Pier, the main strip of shops, which were nice and reasonable. Huntington has almost 9 miles of straight beach. Niiice. We shopped, walked, saw tons of volleyball players, and noticed that we were the oldest people there. Well, close. I’m putting median age at 16. Don’t they have school on Fridays?

We drove through Sunset Beach, Seal Beach, and up to Long Beach. The LBC! It’s not what you think, if you think like me. Theres a ton of industrial port stuff going on, there were more chains than I expected, and I didn’t see one person that could pass for an up and coming musician…

The drive continued through Rancho Palos Verdes, where I spotted the Trump Golf Course. If I ever golf, I’d do it there, on the cliffs overlooking the ocean. It looked spectacular. The houses there were accordingly insane, some just as big as we later saw in Beverly Hills. We stopped in a cove and watched some dolphins paying in the waves below us.

Redondo Beach and Hermosa Beach, which for whatever reason I was expecting great things from, were mostly unremarkable, and we decided to not even stop there. Manhattan Beach was much more eclectic of a beach town, with a nice So-Co (South Congress, that is) kind of a vibe. We drove through El Segundo, and I am happy to report I did not leave my wallet.

We drove through quite a bot of Santa Monica, by the coast, by Venice Beach, and by the mall. Venice by the water was filthy (worse than PB at least), but the shopping on Main Street was cute, it got nicer as you headed north. The Third Street Promenade reminded me of Boston by Faneuil Hall, there were restaurants and street performers and no cars. It was really nice. We hit LA traffic as we headed in right at 7, but got through it easily and saw the longest line in the world for an appearance by Jared Leto. Hmm. We drive right down Rodeo Drive while it was nice and empty, and headed through Beverly Hills to see some mansions.

If any one else said it, it would sound crazy, but it was adorable that my ever-so-unassuming husband actually told BB on the phone that he’d “really like to live here, it’s a nice neighborhood”. Too cute. After driving by the Beverly Hills Hotel and Chateau Marmot and heading down Sunset Strip, I started making reality tv show type recollections, as in gaining the ability to point out to MK many places I’ve seen or heard about (ex. Ketchup – famous from the Hills hahaha) It was a lot of silly fun. We parked to visit the Chinese Theater, Kodak Theater, Hollywood Blvd. stars, and mostly wander through crowds to get some coffee. I love seeing other people love touristy stuff. Our car happened to be right where we could sit and watch Jimmy Kimmel Live’s outdoor stage set up for Paramore. I don’t care what you think, I like that girl’s voice and was pretty excited. We went up north to Valencia to stay overnight.

The hotel we stayed at was one of the nicest I’ve ever seen other than in Vegas. Our room had it’s own patio deck for laying out, and there was a giant pool, fire, and garden. We headed out through the shopping center in the morning. MK actually spent some formative years out here, so he let me know what was new and old as we drove through all of Valencia, Saugus, and Santa Clarita, and he took me to see the house he grew up in. We had a nice little greasy spoon breakfast and went to Vasquez Rocks.

vasquez rocks

When MK told me we were going there I didn’t know what it was, but I recognized it as soon as we pulled up. I hiked up the whole thing (yes, in a sundress) and we got some great pictures. It was beautiful. We drove past Magic Mountain, where MK spent most of his youth, and got on the road to Ojai, the place I picked for our trip.

Ojai has been in tons of shows and news pieces lately, and I really wanted to see what it was all about. We stopped on the way out there and bought more strawberries and oranges than a human could eat in a year for 10$. We saw Thomas Aquinas College, which was neat. The view from the inland road above Ojai Valley was amazing. We had some local Italian and wine for lunch at Boccali’s, and enjoyed the sunny afternoon as we strolled through the parks and shops.

ojai park downtown

The whole drive to Malibu we saw some incredible houses. The canyons were immense. There was still some fire damage in some places by Pepperdine. We stopped in their main shopping center for coffee. My husband, who never knows who anyone is, spotted first the swarm of paps, then none other than Val Kilmer running out of Ralph Lauren. I was pretty impressed – by MK.

Malibu makes no sense to me, as there is very little parking and houses on most of the water front. We drove back up through some other hills and cliffs look at houses. We stopped at Will Rogers State Beach, and walked up and down the Santa Monica Pier. I think all piers should be like this, with rides and games and amusement-type things, as opposed to the Ruby’s diners that you usually see.

Back in LA we saw the Sherman Oaks Galleria and the Getty Center. We managed to drive through half of Hollywood and Hollywoodland and checked out the sign. Also of note was the line of 100s of cars and aliens heading into the giant Church of Scientology Celebrity Center.

I’ve got image descriptions for all the pictures, here’s the link!

For A Minute

You might think that with that view I keep bragging about – you remember, the one with the ocean where I can watch the dolphins and whales and walk to the baby seals and lay out in the sun and get tan – that I wouldn’t leave so much. We’ve got some buddies that keep letting us know we should stay in San Diego for a minute. But who has time for that?

TB and I had a girls day. We skied better than ever in the universe, and had the most fun. I can’t explain to you how not good at things I typically am. This is the first thing I’ve gotten better and better at. When BIL and his GF showed up, we had a blast. We skied our favorite, Deer Valley, and then The Canyons, which while more “out in nature” feeling, was comparatively poorly maintained. But it was something new. I learned why everyone hates snowboarders, why you should wear a helmet, and just how much fun it can be flying as fast as you can down a mountain listening to your headphones. I’m trying to force someone to spend our winter months in Park City next year.

TB and I went out for a lunch and I got a fortune that read “Seize from every moment its uniqueness, especially this week”. I’m going to call that the most appropriate fortune ever, and extend it another week.

KD is already telling me what fun I’m missing. So I’m off to sit out on my balcony for a minute, get some sun and watch those waves, because tomorrow is the start of a whole new week of fantastic-ness. As much as I miss Austin and my friends, I am also soooo excited to just go and see some bands and hang out. It’ll be like a brake-vacation.

I’m So SoCal

Took a road trip yesterday, up to Mission Viejo, Laguna Hills, Laguna Beach and Newport Beach.  It is beautiful. It was unseasonably warm and a great day for a drive. Newport was by far cooler than I expected, a bigger, funner version of Pacific Beach.

I don’t know what it is about it here. I heard things and assumed I’d just hate California and the life and the people and etc. It’s nothing like that. It’s gorgeous and everyone’s happy and working out and loving life. I feel like it’s such a good fit. I feel more myself than I ever have. Of course, since MK wants his 40 acres, we might not afford some of these places. It’s outrageous as ever here. I’m just going to enjoy it while I’ve got it.

We did discuss 6 months in another beach town here.

On Skiing

Total, after this week, I have skied six or seven days in three places (Steamboat, Breckenridge, Park City) all in the last 5 years. I am therefore what you would consider an expert. So here’s a few observations I made:

  • Falling is fun. It is rather hilarious to fall in snow. As long as you’re careful, you’re unlikely to get hurt. I managed to make it into a couple pretty great snow piles. For some reason, this makes me laugh so hard I forget about the achy legs. Everyone else seems to get a kick out of it too.
  • Skiers are cute. There is some strong correlation between knowing how (or at least attempting) to get down a mountain and being gorgeous. Maybe it’s the physical ability required, maybe Chapstick has a secret ingredient. Either way, I’m sold.
  • Utah > Colorado. I know that you might think I’m limited on experience, but I am sure Utah could beat up Colorado, make fun of its Dad, and take its lunch money. Often.
  • Kids ski better. If I ever do accidentally get preggers, those little rats are getting tossed down the mountain before they can say ‘black diamond’. It’s easier when you can’t see past the end of your skis to not be afraid of falling down the whole run. I wish I hadn’t waited 23 years to learn.
  • Achievement is funny. You know when you’ve turned in to a skier? When you have to look out for the slow ones, instead of being one of them!

Honorable Observation Mentionables: Nothing tastes as good after skiing as beer. Except for beer and homemade chili, or beer and homemade chicken legs. Or beer and spaghetti. The night of just beer wasn’t bad either…

Recuperating

palm treeSeriously. What a break. Key West was a blast. We soaked up the rays, and attended a lovely wedding. Our trip to West Palm Beach was just as lovely. Talk about two completely different worlds. We flew overnight, which made it feel like going to a foreign country, and screwed up our sleep schedules for the week. We got in to Ft. Lauderdale and drove through all the keys. There are a lot of keys. Many of the keys look like the other keys…

We got in just in time for some drinks in the pool and the spectacular sunset, then it was off to the rehearsal dinner. It was about 30 people, the intimate kind of wedding we had briefly considered. It was so happy and fun. We went out exploring after dinner and found that there are some very eclectic places there…

The next day MK and I went to the beach, shopped, walked, and toasted our vacation a couple times. The afternoon was perfect for a wedding. The ceremony and dinner was great, and PW managed to get everyone out to Hog’s Breath, where we were met by the Christmas bagpipes. And many other places. You’ll enjoy those pictures once I find them.

We headed up to West Palm on no sleep and laid low that night, then took KK out to breakfast and lunch to visit. Our flight home was on a giant plane so we both slept well.

Not thinking about anything for a few days put me in a great frame of mind. I feel ready to revise, reread, and recreate a great book. Two great books. (That’s right, I have two now.) I feel ready for the holidays. I feel ready to get in touch, get back to life.

The Scenery

MK finally took me on a great tour of where we live.

Here are the pictures.

We went to the La Jolla Beach, drove through more mansions (that’s kind of what they all are here) and up to Mt. Soledad, a really amazing view of the coast from La Jolla to Pacific Beach and back around to the city skyline.

We drove through Old Town, which we’ll have to explore more, and drove over the giant bridge to Coronado, which wasn’t as amazingly ritzy as I had imagined but was still very nice. I wouldn’t say no if you bought me a place there. The beach is incredible, and we could squint and make out pirate ships, which we had to go home and look up immediately. If we ever make any friends down here, we’re throwing a pirate ship party.

I have slightly mentioned to my nomadic husband that I might be perfectly FINE if this is where I end up for a substantial amount of time, we’ll have to see how that goes. The downtown area is super cool. Balboa Park is always crowded but full of things to do. Taking a vacation when we’ve only been here a week put a bump in our exploring, but we’ll see more soon.

One Load Of Laundry

And an episode of Grey’s Anatomy. That is, at 1pm, the extent of my accomplishments for the day. My house smells like a cigarette factory and looks like 400 people came to a party and emptied their pockets of loose change, receipts, and gum wrappers, followed by roaming monkeys throwing clothes at each other.

I have so much to tell you internet, but first I have to find the camera to do the pictures, fumigate my house, and wash all my clothes. Oh, and eat and stuff. I promise once I can feel my feet and my eyes can stay open I will catch you up on some truly fantastic adventures. Don’t be mad if that isn’t until next week sometime, it means the stories are that good…

I take full responsibility for the cheaty-ness of this post.

I Love La Jolla

The fire situation didn’t really affect us. On the way in we drove near the fire near Castaic, staying away from the coast and LA due to the helpful traffic updates from my family, and only really noticed smoke and the smell of fire in the car near Escondido, but since it was night we didn’t see much more than the haze and smoke. In the headlights the ash looked like snow.

We got into La Jolla pretty late, but were able to check into the hotel right on the water that MK had reserved for us. His office was one block away. Two blocks away were my first beer in forever and the best buffalo chicken wings of all time, both of which were heaven at that point. We were wiped out. We fell asleep right after dinner. The next day MK got up early to check out his new digs while I started calling realtors. He drove me up and down La Jolla Blvd. and to Pacific and Mission Beach. Everything here is so beautiful. And the people are uncommonly nice. Whether or not that’s just compared to Seattle-ites I can’t be sure, but it is a nice change.

Basically, over that weekend, FEMA swooped in and put any furnished rental listings on hold, which meant we weren’t able to get in anywhere. Technically. I found an ad on Craigslist that we were able to go see that day, and we took it. I can’t remember ever living in the first place I’ve seen, it felt strange. We were just happy it all worked out, and even better, we could move in the next day.

MK drove me around some more, we walked around the town, to the water, saw some sights, moved his computers (two and four monitors!) into his office, and took a nap. MK’s buddies invited us out and we went to a neat area in Pacific Beach (PB) and to a really fun bar. I forgot it was the weekend before Halloween, so people were dressed up. We had a great time.

One Last Break

We made it that day all the way from Oregon to San Francisco. It’s crazy, I know. I wasn’t driving. In fact, MK drove the whole way. What a good guy. We got in to SF very, very late. Too late to go out, so we passed out at the hotel after watching a few minutes of news on the fires and getting a hotel room for San Diego. ETA: I can’t believe I forgot to mention we drove over the Golden Gate Bridge,  which was neat. But it costs 5$. Which is nuts.

The next morning we were lucky enough to be able to spend some time with my buddy RD. I had the best milkshake in the universe (yes I know that’s not Body for Life style), and he convinced me to sign up on Facebook, if only to play Scrabble, which it just so happens that for an English major I am terrible at.

Anyway, we got to see his work and all that good stuff before we jumped in the car again. The drive from San Fransisco basically to LA is the worst in the world. I know I told you that was near Amarillo, but this was even more dull. There’s nothing at all to look at, it’s barren. Then there’s some fruit plantations (what do they call them?) that stretch a million miles. Then you’re there.

I took one picture in SF:
