New Pantry Plans

Sometimes this house stuff is so uninteresting I feel bad making you read about it. But, Momm likes it and it’s pretty much all I do. MK won’t let me go for a hike or bike ride until I’ve completed the renovations of the entire house. Slave driver.

So, the latest idea is to put a hole in the wall between the kitchen and the living room. Not JUST so I can watch Law and Order while I cook, but to open it up and let more light in. And so I can watch Law and Order while I cook.

We’re planning on taking down all the wood on the living room wall (when MK’s dad comes, which is soon approaching!). Here’s what that looks like to remind you.

The other side of that wall is the pantry. Here’s what that looked like to remind you.

MK ripped all the wood out, and much to our chagrin, as I mentioned in this post, ever so briefly, found wallpaper. And had to remove it. And that was gross. But I did it, patched all the holes, and painted the space.

We have no idea  if it’s possible to make it a whole walk through doorway, or just a picture window type deal. We’ll find out. In the meantime, we went ahead and took down all the shelves. Because if it is eventually a walkway or window, you don’t want to look at our food. We found the perfect ikea piece, which is technically called a ‘desk’ although I can’t see you using it for that. It’s our new roll top hidden pantry.

Park Silly Market

Every Sunday in the spring and summer, Main Street hosts a little street fair with vendors and kids activities, food and shopping. The first Sunday also happened to be SB’s 4th birthday, and we got to go to the Market and celebrate her birthday with the family. She bought her own presents with a gift card and got a free fairy costume. It also happened to be about 40 outside. Brr. For the last three weeks, it’s been warm in the high 70s with one day in the week day that is ice cold.

The second Sunday was Father’s Day, and we got to join the B’s again, for lunch at Wasatch Brew Pub, a stroll down Main, and SB’s first pair of flip flops! We also had cake and wine after to celebrate TB’s birthday and BB’s first 2 kid Father’s Day. The B’s have a busy June!

Here’s a whole album of photos from the weekends. Turn around time is so much better when I’m taking the pictures!

Slice Of Heaven

If anyone didn’t check my Twitter over there on the right (you don’t have to sign in to look around!) you are totally missing out on my super awesome patio and furniture. A few chairs with cushions was all it took to make me fall in love with this house all over again. The weather here is so perfect, so it follows being comfortable outside is perfect. I thought I’d share it again, in a much sunnier picture:

I’ve been sitting out there with my coffee and book most mornings for a week now. It’s all kinds of  gorgeous and lovely. Tons of sweet chirpy birds keep me company. By the way, the latest book I finished, An Arsonist’s Guide to Writers’ Homes in New England, was great if you’re looking for something to read!

We’ve done so much to the house! I kept stalling on the photos – trying to get the B’s over here to see it in person. But each phone call from Momm means I can’t wait any longer.

Here’s a before of my office/2nd guest/future kid if there are kids room:

There were two touching blue walls, and two touching white-ish walls. No idea why. It bugged me. MK replaced all the outlets, and I painted the walls and the ceiling. Then, I finally talked him into letting me put some racing stripes on the wall. It’s the chardonnay and merlot room now!

Painting with a dark color like that on a not perfectly flat wall was no easy feat. Neither was getting the one little drop of paint out of the carpet. But I am super thrilled with how well it came out. Still need to hang a bit of wall art, but making good progress! We painted MK’s office closet, which means I have painted every single room in the house, ceilings too, except his office and the one bathroom downstairs that came done. No wonder my neck permanently hurts!

Everyone Is Getting Robbed

Give it a break.

fives.jpg#155

Five Throw My Arms Up Moments:

  1. Celtics were robbed.
  2. That means Dadd gets robbed, no 2010 champion shirt for Father’s Day.
  3. Team USA  thinks FIFA needs some review footage.
  4. MK didn’t get me all furniture I wanted.
  5. Running really low on good TV to watch!

My Yelp Fail

Or, “Need Yelp Help”.

One thing I love about the B’s is that they try anything and everything once. San Diego is so enormous that sometimes MK and I got in to a routine and didn’t often stray from it. So while we were there visiting and in need of some celebrating, we took to our fancy phones to find a place for lunch we’d all never been to before.

I tried Urbanspoon first, an app that is like casino slots, you give it a shake and it picks neighborhood, price, and cuisine, then suggests a restaurant. Our location was yielding too many chain restaurants, so MB suggested I try Yelp.

I was hesitant, I’ve never had a good experience with that site. Maybe I’m doing it wrong, you tell me. He suggested I type in “best margaritas”. The site did indeed pull up a bunch of Mexican restaurants, so we figured we were good. We picked one with great reviews, or many stars or whatever.

We get there, and the food was only okay, and there were no margaritas. They didn’t even sell them. What did I do wrong? Why did Yelp put this place in my results?

I mentioned once before the other problem I have – if you aren’t just telling me the restaurant was clean, and the service was good, how on earth can I relate to you? I clearly didn’t have the same taste buds as the people that loved the place, and voted NO margaritas as ‘best margaritas’.

I kep forgetting that not everyone has a smartphone (get with it already sheeple) but for those of you that do – is anyone experimenting with layar or any other augmented reality app?

Get Motivated

So when we met up with MH she invited me to a seminar with motivational speakers she was going to for work. I had to say yes since I knew that MK thought I couldn’t get up that early the next morning after our crazy night out.

I really don’t think I have been up at 6am in four years. But I did it. And showered and was ready by 6:30.  I rule. I got a coffee in the car, and a water when we sat down. Energy Solutions Arena was packed. I got to hear Gen. Colin Powell, Rudy Guliani, John Walsh, and Mitt Romney speak. It was interesting. As long as you take what you hear with a grain of salt, those things can serve the purpose of a little reminder to pump you up about life or work or whatever goal you’re trying to achieve.

On the other hand, the thing was super religious (perhaps because of where we were), super patriotic, and super sales pitchy. Fine for me, but I was hoping the other people there didn’t put all their eggs in the basket of the guy promising to make them rich with stock or real estate investments.

Also, in spite of Rudy Guliani telling people to get with it technologically, no one was tweeting. I kept checking searches to see what people were saying. Like I mentioned, there were tens of thousands of people there. I thought it was strange that there were maybe three people tweeting their thoughts. Totally gave MK proof it’s not as major a resource as I keep trying to tell him.

It was a big adventure for me to be out all day, people watching and remembering what it was like to be all done up in business attire. Reminded me of lots of good times in Austin. Almost made me want to get back to a career and busy business stuff. Almost. 🙂

Taco Tuesday Torture

You know we are big old fans of Taco Tuesday. We don’t eat out all the time, and when we do it’s virtually impossible for me to finish a huge serving size of anything. So we end up doing small snacky things and appetizers. Taco Tuesday is a cheap way for me to get a little snack and MK to eat as much as he can. We went on the prowl for some yummy cheap eats on Tuesday night. We started at Windy Ridge. I had one 2$ taco, MK had 2$ taquitos, but the margaritas were 4.75. MK remembered Davanza’s did tacos, so we went there, and were told they DON’T do tacos. Pfft.

We had a drink at Easy Street, which was DELICIOUS and NOT CHEAP. MK wanted more food so we tried a new place called Reyes Adobe. They didn’t have a bar. The call themselves a restaurant and margarteria or some crap and didn’t have a bar. In Utah that means you HAVE to order food to get a drink. We should have left. The taco MK got was gross, the tortilla soup I had to get was gross, and the drinks were even more gross.

The soup was like pureed rice in tomato broth. I gagged it was so bad. Kind of a bust, we won’t be going back there! We learned we should have just stayed where we were.

In other news of the day, I thought Momm would like to see what the mountains look like:

And we ran in to TB and the kids and went back to their place with them to visit for a bit. It was super exciting because I forcibly got MK to hold the baby:

We went to O’Shucks and had a drink with MH and watched the Celtics suck. It was kind of a 45 hour day.
