Park City Mountain Resort

We have company this weekend that snowboards. MK had taken care of NN and ND in my absence so this was my first trip this year to a resort other than Deer Valley. (DV doesn’t do snowboards). The main problem I had with Park City resort is that they don’t limit their ticket sales. There is no “sold out” point. It was amazingly crowded. We couldn’t find parking. On the mountain no matter what your level of ability, you got to harrowing spots. The pit stops for food were packed. The bathrooms were dirty.

I’m not going to preach too much about etiquette and skiing vs. snowboarding. The evidence speaks for itself…and to be fair there were some crazy skiers out there too. I got pretty worn out looking out for people that were supposed to be looking out for me – that’s why I got better at skiing in the first place- and trying a new strange mountain. I hope tomorrow is a little calmer. Seriously it was a strong reminder that we are so spoiled at Deer Valley and will continue to appreciate that.

Otherwise we had a lot of fun. We weren’t happy to see KG get hurt, but did enjoy the Celtics game. We made new friends and found an interesting new bar. Keeping busy is always fun but I’m headed to a lazy dinner and night in with a movie – unless my eyes don’t cooperate, a distinct possibility.

Appreciating Your Understanding

Man, I miss you guys! This intermittent blogging is just not working for me! I’m not even sure what’s going on or what to tell you about. We’re sending the computer in so that’s the good news, mainly that it’s not my fault and will get fixed apparently under warranty. Bad news is I’m going to be begging for blogging during SXSW! That’s right folks, finally after much drama my flight is (correctly) booked and I’m off. I was nervous MK wasn’t going to send me but I convinced him getting away will be good for me. SB and others will be there and that has me super excited that this year will be the best yet. The party invites are already rolling in. The band list looks great, as always.

Hopefully KD will put up with my chronicling our adventures this year for posterity from her gear since I’ll be empty handed. Or maybe even JC’s iPhone would do the trick – Apple had a WordPress application that Blackberry doesn’t. Boo. If nothing else, know that I’ll take a ton of pictures and good notes!

In other quick blurt update kinda news we had a ton of snow this week. I still end up last all the time but have to admit I impressed myself – if no one else- this week by learning a lot about how to ski when you can’t see your skis. The pictures don’t do the snow of the crazy new runs justice. I almost want to get myself the shirt ASH liked, “Sometimes I amaze even myself!”

Birthday, Week One

Did you think I was kidding? Oh, no friends. When you turn this unexciting of an age and have nothing going on, you need to make your own party. This is a marathon. So my birthday (which was Monday) started last Thursday. I went shopping. At the outlets. And bought stuff. Shoes, a coat, a Coach purse (which I realized I had no need for and returned) and earrings and a headband. Really thrilling stuff. But it was fun just to be out. TB, current love of my life, took me out for Chinese. This will be a tradition.

Friday I skied with MK. It was a blast. I think this was when I figured it out. We came home and got ready for dinner, which we had at the Deer Valley Seafood Buffet, courtesy of my loving mommy. Lest Buffet sound cheesy, make no mistake, I enjoyed more delicious five star cuisine than the previous “X” years of my life. 😉 And, dude, TB (reason for love-of-life status) picked out the most amazing present in the world for me, wait until you see it.

We last minute just had to run out for some drinks, TB (again, love of my life) calling out for shots. Yeehaw. We met some silly LA’ers and had a giant phony one-upping contest. Giggles and more shots. Celebrity hunting.

We totally got catcalled - which is awesome even if it's not your birthday!

I had the funniest time the next morning – Saturday- feeling faintly hungover but somehow still on skis with TB. We were a sight. We also got to see (finally) someone famous here for Sundance. Kira fell right in front of me, and Kevin Bacon had to help her up. It kinda blew her cover. Sunday we skied with Bob. I had to show off. I totally came home and fell in to a coma. We went out for pizza (last junk food of the year…) at a new fantastic restaurant that we all loved. Thanks J!

Monday was this thing called my actual birthday. SKI BIRTHDAYS RULE! My legs were wiped out from the past two awesome days, but beer helped. TB and I were “first beer” at Empire Lodge. Quality. Then we went for round two at Silver Lake. By then, we were golden. I let go of trying to ‘do it right’ and just had fun. My mom AND DAD (MOSTLY DAD) sent me some beautiful flowers (MK got me some you can see in the background too):

MK took me out for drinks and made me a cake. We really had a great night. Yesterday was all about running errands and cleaning – KD And JC get here today! Let Week Two festivities begin!

Regression, Revisited

Last week, I told you that I was kinda over skiing. I mean, we moved here to get better, and I was getting worse. Some afterthought went a long way, and holy crap, I skied something like 7 days in a row. Anyone would be tired. So I didn’t stink, I was worn out.

Then, come to find out (no surprise here) I was DOING it wrong. There’s this idea that you should be on the EDGE of your skis. To dig in to the snow. And lean forward. Not backward. That will kill you. So, this week, I kinda got it. I was on edge. I was leaning forward. I was making big, slow, wide turns. Cool.

BB and MK took me down a steep groomed black three times in a row- and I did it better than the blues and greens I suffered down with JM and WB. They might need to come back and see the new me. We went out for my birthday and did the run with TB, and I was much more worn out. So my thing to work on now is to ski well even when I’m sore – it actually takes less effort, but for some reason that isn’t getting to my brain. But the good news is I’m not going to pack up and run just yet. KD and JC get in tomorrow – I’ll let you know if they’re laughing at me or with me!

Regression

Only I would find the way to be a worse skier after all this skiing. The last few days have been murder. Not only are my knees all jacked up and my legs all wobbly, but I’m straight up embarrassing myself with my company. I mean, I knew I’d most likely be the worse of anyone that came to visit, and they’re here for the snow, not for me, but man. I could get down anything last week – I was doing blacks! Now, I’m about ready to head back the the bunny slopes and relearn the snow plow. It’s like something broke and I’m not smart enough to fix it.

I hope it’s just exhaustion. I hope I’m going to be fine. This week was more days skiing than ever total before in my life, I hope that’s the problem. But taking yesterday off wasn’t enough. I got out there and had another horrible morning, didtching WB and MK to enjoy the day while I wobbled home. To blog to you about my inability. Thanks for letting me vent. Now if only you could correct my form.

Park City Utah During Ski Season

Every place that we have lived has been a learning experience. Seattle right downtown gave us real city living. San Diego, of course, showed us life’s a beach. And here in the middle of Park City ski season we are learning what it feels to be like the other 8000 people completely shocked by the behavior of the people just stopping by.

Don’t get me wrong, I can’t judge everyone. BB certainly can, and will feel free to point out every terrible non-capable-snow-driver (to keep swear words out of the blog). He’s an expert at this on the slopes as well. I’ve only noticed that there are people that act the way they always do, totally cool and normal, and people who should be made to wear giant bumper stickers on their backs that say “Excuse me”.

The driving is one thing. I like to think that when we visited even if we didn’t know exactly where we were going, we didn’t endanger any lives. I like to think that wherever we fly we aren’t that out of the loop. Our main shopping for necessities here typically takes place in the Wal-Mart, because it is the closest. Mostly since the holidays started, people are tearing that place up. No one picks up after themselves. If they or their children drop something, they walk away. One lady, instead of trying to move around me, plowed straight into me with her cart. Awesome. I certainly hope it’s holiday-shopping-itis. but I don’t think so. And if you’re wondering how I know if they’re local or not, come visit. It’s pretty clear. Tourists complain more about things they don’t like, out loud. Some people here act like you don’t speak the same language if you tell them something they don’t want to hear.

There is another kind of tourist, though. And TB was quick to point out – without them, we’d have no good people watching. Deer Valley is a premiere ski resort destination. There are homes worth more than Donald Trump out here. I’m never going to get tired of the older done up ladies trying to drag their giant fur coats through muddy mushy snow. Or the once every ten year skier:

That Time Again

So it’s that time of year, when the blogging is slim, the holidays are abounding or whatever it is they do to you, and we’re planning on starting over fresh.

Our little plan kind of backfired. We wanted to wait until after Christmas and splurge on some things for each other. Nothing we really wanted was even on sale, and there’s actually not much we really want, or need. So far I’ve spent 7$, on some eye shadow. We’ve been down in our bat cave playing the new Xbox 360 MK got himself for his gift. That is when we’re not skiing. Skiing Christmas Eve Eve was a blast, and the day after Christmas TB’s family got to watch us come down the most challenging runs I’ve done yet. Living at the mountain instead of visiting really does do wonders.

My Christmas Eve this year was similar to last year in only one regard: fajitas. TB invited us over and we hung out relaxed style as the snow storm began. Christmas day we opened the great gifts MIL had sent, watched parades and ate junk food. The rest of the week we skied, as I mentioned, and got to hang out with the TB family. I even got my first (of many to come…) Cranium night.

The end of a year is always a fun and unique time with us, but I always get a little lonely even though I got to visit my family this year. So it was extra special to steal a little TB family love. Now the tree is down, the tourists are everywhere, and we’re looking forward to another storm and some more good times.

I’ve got my cousin JM coming, then WB, KD, JC, NN, ND and co., SH, JM, A and NH, and maybe even a SF. So the fun for us is just getting started. These folks should keep me busy. So the break in excitement is good, I’m going to be cooking and cleaning until March. And there’s nothing that could make me happier! 🙂

I’m going on auto post for a few days, see you here next year!

Great Inspiration

If you don’t know who he is, shame on you. Look it up. I suggest Netflix, Watch Instantly.
