Blame The Weather

Or the husband, or the exploring, or the city, or the internet…

I miss you guys. I haven’t even been able to barely turn on the computer, I admit it. I haven’t been perusing, exploring, driveling, okay, or anything on the computer lately. Here’s my formal apology for all those lazy posts, to all of you calling asking “What has been going ON!?!?!” I haven’t even checked email (although now that I have, I have plans for tonight!) lately. It’s too sunny, too beautiful, too fun to walk around, too much to do! MK has been bogarting the internet, but is finally hooking up the wifi as I type. Small victory.

We have been gallivanting all over. We played poker, went out to dinner, and are currently in the midst of the Seattle Maritime Festival, which began yesterday with the Seattle Waterfront Neighborhood Chowder Cook Off. For 5 dollars, we get chowder from 20 restaurants all weekend to taste and vote for our favorite. There will also be boating and free tours of the aquarium and harbor. Yipee!

I’ve been keeping up my running, been able to add weights also (it’s sunny from 5am to 9pm, I’m getting in two workouts most days) and in addition to all that MK and I walk everywhere. The only small catch is all this seafood. I’m fairly certain I’d weigh 12 lbs. if I wasn’t trying to scarf down all the deliciousness that surrounds me everywhere I look. We grilled prawns on the roof again the other night, and some kabobs. It doesn’t seem to get any better than this. The waterfront run is so beautiful, I have to say I think it beats Town Lake in Austin. We saw a seal while we were running yesterday. How many of you have had that happen?;)

I forgot to share the great story of the arm wrestling debacle, wherein the dishwasher of the pizza restaurant made $65 or so beating a friend, here’s the proof (I guess we took pictures after all):

I haven’t done the customary, “By the way, I have a blog and your picture is subject to publication at any time” disclaimer, so let’s hope everyone’s cool…

And, in closing, for now, I’d like to let you know that I’ll be back soon(er).

Why I Blog

This is another meme, this time from snippy

I started my blog because she did. I saw hers and liked what I saw, what it was all about. Santi, too. I thought it’d be a fun hobby, a way to chronicle my book writing, and I even gave my mom the link, so it turned in to a way to let my family and friends know what I was up to. I have more readers and subscribers than I ever imagined, and really try to provide fun content. Not working gives me the time, and all the fun adventures I’ve had, New Zealand and SXSW and others, have made this little site a great spot for memories.

It has turned into something so much bigger, a platform to analyze my feelings, learn what others feel about issues, and a dashboard to all the other bloggers that I can see and learn from. It’s a whole new community for me that I’ve loved learning about.

I’ll just tag santi, iced mocha, and blindeh on this one!

Blog Day Of Silence

Tomorrow is a Blog Day of Silence, I’ve seen on a couple sites and decided to join them tomorrow, April 30th, 2007, and this blog will be silent. It may seem silly and insignificant, but these people are creating awareness.

I enjoy this perspective: Silence is a Memoriam, Not a Reason to Stop Blogging.

From Lorelle:

My blog is silent tomorrow as a tribute and memorial, not because I have nothing to say. Trust me, I have plenty to say on the issue. I will use my mouth, not my fingers, tomorrow to speak out on the issue. I will spend time with my family and friends and listen to their feelings on the issue, many who have also been victims of violence. I give my time to them in honor of this day, when thousands on the web will also be honoring the death and victimization of so many for no good reason.

Thank you. Thank you for listening. Thank you for participating. And even if you don’t, thank you for speaking out. The issue of this Blog Day of Silence has generated more talk about violence and human rights than most news reports. We need to keep talking. We must keep talking. If we are talking about it, hopefully we’ll be too busy to be hurting each other.

Gotta Get Goals

This meme comes from my friend blindeh, and the rules can be found at AlexShalman.com

They aren’t exactly over the top or unique, and I’m good with 5 for now, rather than 10. I’m a simple kind of gal.

  1. Publish my book. I have walked away from this beast twice now. It was one thing to write, and completely another to try to edit. I don’t want to give up, I think it has a chance, and I know I can make y’all buy copies, if only out of sheer curiosity. I want to compete in Nano again this November, so I want to set the goal here and now to have it edited by then. I’m in a new city with very little to distract me, so I feel like now is the time to make more time and less excuses.
  2. External ReConstruction. I have been working out and working on this little body seriously since January. I’ve seen results and want that to continue. It may not increase my life span, or improve my attitude, but I’ve thoroughly enjoyed this change in my life and know it’s a positive one. I want every morning to be waking up in my best shape yet. It takes determination and perseverance to not make excuses, and has challenged me mentally as well and physically.
  3. Internal ReConstruction. Along with my body needing work, I realized my mind and heart do too. Everyone always gets hokey on this one, but I’m very simply just trying to be a better person. I always thought I knew who I was and what I was going to be since I was old enough to walk. I’m realizing a little introspection and effort is worth it. Enough said.
  4. Travel all the continents and states. I’m doing pretty good on this one. I have been so blessed to see so much, and know without a doubt you extend your horizons through new cultures and new places. I want that to continue, to share that with my husband, and eventually our family.
  5. Find a home. Ideally, I would be closest the people that mean the most to me: my parents, (only!) cousin, my brother-in-law, and even T and BB. Where we will end up is so up in the air, and I’d like to have a stronger sense of my future and where it will be.

I’m supposed to tell people to do this, too: how about snippy, misadventures, and simply missional. I would tag TB, but she still doesn’t have her own blog…

All Caught Up

Thursday we did more shopping, found the Best Buy and the Target, things MK can’t live without, and then last night we went to our first Mariners game, which was fantastic fun. I really hope my parents come down in August and watch the Red Sox with me. It’s a great stadium, and there’s a bus right outside that took us there.

Today is actually the 100th Anniversary celebration for Pike’s Market, so we’re headed out to see what that is all about. We’ll venture out to a bar for the first time tonight, and tomorrow try out brunch. Can’t wait!

She’ll be watching Law & Order two hours earlier…

Somegosoftly has reached Seattle! I know you are all atwitter, anxious to hear about the journey and first impressions of the new habitat, but CK needs her rest. The best part of this post, I’m sure, is the resulting fact that you will no longer be subjected to my amateur attempts at blogging…. Except maybe one more…..

Thou shalt not neglect thy friend’s blog.

Okay, so maybe I wasn’t the best choice to act as steward of somegosoftly during CK’s road-trip. I failed to post yesterday, leaving somegosoftly’s dedicated readers to fend for themselves in cyberspace on the one day of the week when employers actually expect you to spend more time surfing the internet than working: Friday.

Instead of crafting something interesting, amusing or thought-provoking to publish on my good friend’s blog, I spent Friday cleaning my house from top to bottom in anticipation of the arrival of Very Special Friends from Dallas whom we haven’t seen in over a year. So much has changed in the year since we’ve seen the VSFfDs… the most notable is that we have created a new little person who lives with us and fills our days with sunshine and laughter. The VSFfDs have no children, and I feared the sight of my house — strewn with noisy, colorful toys, piles of laundry and dirty dishes, and elsewhere blanketed with a thick layer of dust — might forever postpone any plans they had of procreating. Hence Friday’s marathon house-cleaning project.

Toilets scrubbed to sparkling perfection, floors swiffered and mopped, all laundry folded and hidden away, I finally put my feet up and opened a beer. Too tired, I mumbled, too tired to blog tonight. Three beers later, I crawled into bed and fell fast asleep, confident that the VSFfDs would arrive tomorrow and think I was the perfect wife and mother– Just look at these toilets! they would exclaim, I think we could eat off of them!

Alas, no happy dreams awaited me. Instead, I woke with a start in the middle of the night, heart pounding and overwhelmed by guilt. You see, I dreamt that a lonely somegosoftly reader, distraught by the absence of a Friday post, had decided to shrug off this mortal coil… her suicide note: an eloquent goodbye posted as a comment on this blog. To that poor soul I can only say I’m sorry you had to die… but God are my toilets clean!

Weird Week

The last week before you put all your things away and drive for five days is very odd.

Your diet: I’m eating cans of tuna that have been in the cupboard for a while. I made pancakes without a spatula. I’m over-seasoning everything. Because we’re trying to get rid of all the odd stuff. We have no pans or anything now, so it’s Lean Cuisines for dinner. Mmm.

Your wardrobe: I’m wearing and washing things over and over, half of my clothes are in suitcases to bring, the other half are in storage. And some things I can’t decide what to do with are sitting lonely on one little closet rack. Don’t make fun of me if I’m in the same shirt for the week.

Your schedule: I’ve been getting up earlier and earlier, and in the middle of the night, thinking of things to do, and then not being able to relax until I’ve done them. During the day, I don’t feel like working out after moving heavy things, so I wait until late – or don’t go at all.

Your communication: I’ve been calling friends to let them know I’m leaving, reminding family, and writing through email, myspace and blog all over to make sure everyone knows and cries. It’s like having a baby, it’s all we talk about. Get a grip, somegosoftly, it’s 6 months.

Your mood: MK and I are a little insane. We’re trying to fit everything into the back of the car, so we’ve turned into snoopy snoop comparer’s.

Actual conversation tidbits: “Well, if you’re bringing three toothbrushes I don’t see why I can’t bring these notebooks..”

“Like you’re going to use that dictionary. You can’t spell.”

“Maybe if you quit burning CDs and got our taxes done, we could pack that computer.”

“How about you just buy me a new laptop when we get there?”

That last one was me, duh.

____________________________________________________________

In other somegosoftly news, last night I had a very exciting dinner conversation, and bartered some of my time for a guest blogger that will tide you over while I’m on the road. A really good, funny, better than any guest blogger ever guest blogger.

Yay!!!

You Tube For All

Everyone is talking about this, everyone. It is very funny.

I love Alanis Morissette.

But I have to tell you, when I saw THIS, I was even more impressed:

Equal amounts of shock, horror, and amusement. You Tube is delicious. There is just no end to the stuff out there. My only concerns are that 1) Celine is for serious and 2) she’s on my blog.

Yikes.
