Too Easy Not To

According to Litlove, I can say whatever I want in this ‘7 things about writing’ meme.

  1. I first decided I wanted to write a book in Mrs. Thompson’s class. I won the spelling bee, and my prize was a copy of A Tree Grows in Brooklyn. Not only was I Francie Nolan, but I could write like that book was written, I presumed. I’ve since read that book at least a dozen times. For inspiration. And because it’s a freaking good book.
  2. I wrote for the high school poetry club, and also was the editor of whatever you call the dumb excuse for a paper they had. My prized editorial was about drunk driving, my Mom might have it somewhere. NOT quality.
  3. I was published in the local paper as well, in an editorial. (This is practically chronological). Seeing my name and written words in print gave me a feeling it’s not appropriate I blog about.
  4. I believe wholeheartedly that Emerson is the best writer I’ve had the fortune to read.
  5. The hardest part of the 60,000-some words of my novel wasn’t getting it all down the first time, or even making concepts clear, but knowing what to cut and what to keep. I can edit with the best of them, but it’s hard to know when to let it go sometimes. You can’t be too obvious, but you can be redundant. What a fine line.
  6. Other art inspires good art. Listening to music is key in my writing process, to inspire.
  7. It follows that writers also inspire other writers. Writers on writing is food for my soul as well as my fingertips. Listening to those with past and present success convince, teach, and persuade me to have my own.

Wasting Time

From iced mocha

A-Attached or Single?
So attached. In a good way.

B-Best Friend:
I’ve learned to never throw that around again, my BF should always stay the same, even if she lives in Denver, or NYC. She was the only normal one.

C-Cake or Pie:
If I had to pick, cake, if it’s cheesecake. It’s the only sweet I eat, although I can’t remember the last time I had some.

D-Drink of Choice:
This always makes me laugh, I immediately think alcohol…how about Enviga.

E-Essential Item: Lip gloss. Really. Running outside = lipgloss.

F- Favorite color:
Black is the new black.

G-Gummi Bears or Worms?
Both! Bears are good in martinis (bet you didn’t know that) and worms are good in those little cups you make in kindergarten with pudding and mushed up oreos.

H-Hometown:
Smallest place in the universe, Connecticut.

I-Indulgence:
Used to be my mani/pedi, which I haven’t had since I moved from Austin, since it was a $70 luxury. Here, I recently discovered full sets for $20 by UW. I’m still wondering if it’s safe…

J-January or February:
January, of course, SEND ME BIRTHDAY PRESENTS!!! 🙂

K-Kids:
Are someone else’s problem. My parents are way too young to be grandparents. And I’m trying to stay skinny.

L-Life is incomplete without:
Happiness and love. Optimistic attitudes. Life changing moments. A little sun, a little rain. Growth.

M-Marriage Date:
May 28!!! SEND MORE PRESENTS!!!!

N-Number of Siblings:
Two little (but bigger) brothers. Who are just lovely.

O-Oranges or Apples?
Apples with PB, or OJ. Tough call.

P-Phobias/Fears:
Tobophobia – fear of being buried alive. I also – since seeing a certain Mythbusters – am a little afraid of driving my car into a lake.

Q-Favorite Quote:
A chief event of life is the day in which we have encountered a mind that startled us.~Emerson

I’m practically always smiling, unless my contacts hurt.

Now that I live somewhere that has seasons, I’m excited about summer.

T-Tag Three:
Blindeh, snippy, tmom.

Shoe shopping in the other window for ‘sensible walking sneaks’.

For what? Neither, please.

Why I Blog

This is another meme, this time from snippy

I started my blog because she did. I saw hers and liked what I saw, what it was all about. Santi, too. I thought it’d be a fun hobby, a way to chronicle my book writing, and I even gave my mom the link, so it turned in to a way to let my family and friends know what I was up to. I have more readers and subscribers than I ever imagined, and really try to provide fun content. Not working gives me the time, and all the fun adventures I’ve had, New Zealand and SXSW and others, have made this little site a great spot for memories.

It has turned into something so much bigger, a platform to analyze my feelings, learn what others feel about issues, and a dashboard to all the other bloggers that I can see and learn from. It’s a whole new community for me that I’ve loved learning about.

I’ll just tag santi, iced mocha, and blindeh on this one!

Gotta Get Goals

This meme comes from my friend blindeh, and the rules can be found at AlexShalman.com

They aren’t exactly over the top or unique, and I’m good with 5 for now, rather than 10. I’m a simple kind of gal.

  1. Publish my book. I have walked away from this beast twice now. It was one thing to write, and completely another to try to edit. I don’t want to give up, I think it has a chance, and I know I can make y’all buy copies, if only out of sheer curiosity. I want to compete in Nano again this November, so I want to set the goal here and now to have it edited by then. I’m in a new city with very little to distract me, so I feel like now is the time to make more time and less excuses.
  2. External ReConstruction. I have been working out and working on this little body seriously since January. I’ve seen results and want that to continue. It may not increase my life span, or improve my attitude, but I’ve thoroughly enjoyed this change in my life and know it’s a positive one. I want every morning to be waking up in my best shape yet. It takes determination and perseverance to not make excuses, and has challenged me mentally as well and physically.
  3. Internal ReConstruction. Along with my body needing work, I realized my mind and heart do too. Everyone always gets hokey on this one, but I’m very simply just trying to be a better person. I always thought I knew who I was and what I was going to be since I was old enough to walk. I’m realizing a little introspection and effort is worth it. Enough said.
  4. Travel all the continents and states. I’m doing pretty good on this one. I have been so blessed to see so much, and know without a doubt you extend your horizons through new cultures and new places. I want that to continue, to share that with my husband, and eventually our family.
  5. Find a home. Ideally, I would be closest the people that mean the most to me: my parents, (only!) cousin, my brother-in-law, and even T and BB. Where we will end up is so up in the air, and I’d like to have a stronger sense of my future and where it will be.

I’m supposed to tell people to do this, too: how about snippy, misadventures, and simply missional. I would tag TB, but she still doesn’t have her own blog…

This Is Spartaaa…

What did you think of that movie, The 300? The gratuitous nudity and beefy men had me only half interested. The cinematography was neat. I didn’t know it came from a comic book graphic novel… that’s cool, I guess. I saw it at the Alamo, the day it came out, that may have been the most interesting part. Only people really into a movie do that (and their wives…)

No matter what you thought, you should love this thread, despite the low bandwidth for the image hosting – hopefully they’ll fix that. Be sure to scroll through ALL pages of comments to see every image. I can’t stop laughing.

I Am From

You should do this, every one I’ve seen is amazing, in realization and alive.

My favorite so far: LitLove

I am from the water, the land, and the sea salt air where the two meet. I am from lobsters and beach houses, running on sand and eating clam chowda. I am from light in my life, from stresses, from the tender hugs of ‘cuddling’ with mom during Lifetime movies. I am from pretending to swim in my toy-box.

I am from fearlessness, determination, and Pleasant View Drive. I am from a room with a slanted ceiling that dad strung with nets for teddy bears. I am from glasses, and braces, and hair down to my knees. I am from my student loans and my books and my loves and my memories.

I am from these keys I type on, their movement recording my insides, making something permanent. I am from the ink of every pen in my collection that moves across every page of every journal, every notebook, every word I write. I am from making stuff up. I am from tea and from wine, from songs and from lyrics, from all of my travels and all of what there is to come. I am from my poor French to my perfect teeth.

I am from yelling and being passionate and from being told to settle down and not settling. I am from embracing all that is wrong with me and all that is wrong with you, from changing and from staying the same, persevering and smiling.

I am from “sucking the marrow out of life” and from Emerson and from Hawthorne. I am from every page that I have read, every book that I have highlighted, every quote that I have remembered. I am from the morning I awake and from the praise I give God with my day.

Where are you from?
