Being Have

It’s really hard for me to behave. I can’t remember which munchkin we knew that used to ask “Are you bein’have?”

Toting the in laws back to Park City and using them as indentured servants seemed totally appropriate knowing how good FIL is at this stuff. I’ve tried to help. I’ve tried to suggest fun activities. I’ve tried to help MK bond to his family. The house stuff was just a bonus. Then the project I asked for got started. But now I don’t want them to leave. And it’s not just because I’m worried we won’t ever be able to finish this project without them. Although we might not have company for a while.

It’s fun with a house full. SIL is young, as you may or may not know, and a pure PLEASURE to have around the house. I could adopt an 11 year old. MIL is teaching me how to cook. FIL laughs at all my jokes.

So I’m trying not to think about them leaving – about how life will get back to normal and we’ll stay up late and get back on the internet and not make frowny faces about other stuff we’re missing (Twitter was down? It’s amazing how you don’t notice the fail whale if you GET OUT.) or forgetting. I’m not thinking about the gym I haven’t been to in a week, the pigging out we’ve been doing.

Because family is fun. We really fall off the grid here when family comes. I guess it’s because we’re different people. There’s normal us, ans then take it down 50 clicks family is in town us. Make sure you’re bein’have.

House Decorating!

MK’s Dad, brother and sister are going to be here soon. So we’ve been touching up a ton of little things on the house all week. It’s been a lot of work. No one likes going through their house pointing out what’s wrong with it, what they missed, what they did that isn’t so hot. Lots of paint retouching, hanging some art, cleaning mistakes up here and there. It can take time. But we did finally get around to some projects we’ve been putting off.

Mostly, it involved curtains. Curtains I swore I’d never put up, then got tricked into putting up. I’m glad I did, they look awesome. The master bedroom is SO almost done, same for the guest room. One or two more pieces of art.

Outside, MK raised the border on the flower bed in the front. As you can see in the pictures, that was pretty intense.

Our home decorating photos – still in progress.

Master Bedroom

I’ve told you twice now that I’ve been sleeping in an unfinished room.

It looked like this for a long time.

Then we finally got around to the sanding. If I ever leave or even slightly tick off MK, he’s got photos of me at my most doofus looking – the day I had to sand the room. Eye gear, beanie since it kept getting in my hair. Long shirt and pants. And it still got everywhere. Drywall spackle dust SUCKS.

Then we primed it and it looked bad. So there was some respackling and resanding. Then priming again. Then this week, FINALLY, MK, who lost a bet and got forced to do it instead of me, put up the knockdown. The walls were textured and we had to make our new wall match. Yikes. So glad it wasn’t me. And thankfully he did incredibley, considering how tricky of a project it was.

Then I painted and WOAH! For the first time probably since we moved in, the bedroom was all the same color. The walls and trim got a touch up. The  closets are done. We have curtains and vases and wall art and only need a TV for the room the be complete. Amazing!

New Walls!

This is right before we hung the painting. We’ll put a black dresser in front and mount a tv, maybe from the ceiling, so it hangs in front. It’s just an ikea print, but it really opens the room up.

Ta Da!

New Pantry Plans

Sometimes this house stuff is so uninteresting I feel bad making you read about it. But, Momm likes it and it’s pretty much all I do. MK won’t let me go for a hike or bike ride until I’ve completed the renovations of the entire house. Slave driver.

So, the latest idea is to put a hole in the wall between the kitchen and the living room. Not JUST so I can watch Law and Order while I cook, but to open it up and let more light in. And so I can watch Law and Order while I cook.

We’re planning on taking down all the wood on the living room wall (when MK’s dad comes, which is soon approaching!). Here’s what that looks like to remind you.

The other side of that wall is the pantry. Here’s what that looked like to remind you.

MK ripped all the wood out, and much to our chagrin, as I mentioned in this post, ever so briefly, found wallpaper. And had to remove it. And that was gross. But I did it, patched all the holes, and painted the space.

We have no idea  if it’s possible to make it a whole walk through doorway, or just a picture window type deal. We’ll find out. In the meantime, we went ahead and took down all the shelves. Because if it is eventually a walkway or window, you don’t want to look at our food. We found the perfect ikea piece, which is technically called a ‘desk’ although I can’t see you using it for that. It’s our new roll top hidden pantry.

Slice Of Heaven

If anyone didn’t check my Twitter over there on the right (you don’t have to sign in to look around!) you are totally missing out on my super awesome patio and furniture. A few chairs with cushions was all it took to make me fall in love with this house all over again. The weather here is so perfect, so it follows being comfortable outside is perfect. I thought I’d share it again, in a much sunnier picture:

I’ve been sitting out there with my coffee and book most mornings for a week now. It’s all kinds of  gorgeous and lovely. Tons of sweet chirpy birds keep me company. By the way, the latest book I finished, An Arsonist’s Guide to Writers’ Homes in New England, was great if you’re looking for something to read!

We’ve done so much to the house! I kept stalling on the photos – trying to get the B’s over here to see it in person. But each phone call from Momm means I can’t wait any longer.

Here’s a before of my office/2nd guest/future kid if there are kids room:

There were two touching blue walls, and two touching white-ish walls. No idea why. It bugged me. MK replaced all the outlets, and I painted the walls and the ceiling. Then, I finally talked him into letting me put some racing stripes on the wall. It’s the chardonnay and merlot room now!

Painting with a dark color like that on a not perfectly flat wall was no easy feat. Neither was getting the one little drop of paint out of the carpet. But I am super thrilled with how well it came out. Still need to hang a bit of wall art, but making good progress! We painted MK’s office closet, which means I have painted every single room in the house, ceilings too, except his office and the one bathroom downstairs that came done. No wonder my neck permanently hurts!

House Things

We’re back to work. Now that it’s warm and dry we can get so much more done. MK rented a trailer and we took two runs to the dump. There was 1700lbs. of trash in our garage! Including the woodstove, the pipes, the wood we’d taken down in various closets, and just some random trash. We swept and cleaned out the garage and it looks great now. MK also went and bought two large trees for the side yard, and some patio furniture for our front deck!

Lot of Crap

The second trip

I put the furniture together while he ran around. I also cleaned the front and back yards and decks, weeded, seeded and watered the yards. I’ve never really done that much yardwork before, it was tough, probably good exercise. We planted some small shrubs last week, and they haven’t died yet, so I’m calling that a success.

We turned on the hot tub and shocked it. We’re cleaning it to hopefully sell. Those things are way too much work and trouble, and we never used it.

We spent a day at ikea buying a bunch of decorations, got them home, then brough half of them back. We have two floor standing vases with sticks in them. Whatever.

We have a huge list of furniture to order and get brought to us, but first we needed to finish our room! Remember this post? Where I called it a big reveal, pfft? And said coming soon? Well, now it really is. It’s been sitting like that looking crappy for two whole months. But I just got done respackling, sanding, and priming my wall. It’ll be gray tonight. MK has to do to the knockdown on the big wall and ceiling. It should be gray soon. We’ve picked out a dresser to go along the wall, a huge canvas to hang on the wall, and a TV to hang over the canvas. It’s gonna look coooool.

We painted MK’s closet in his office, pulled down junky shelves, and moved one of my big library shelves in there. Which means I had to rearrange my office. It looks a little empty but it works. I’m planning on painting it this weekend.

Spring Skiing And Spring Cleaning

It just dumped and dumped this past weekend. All we had to do was clear our decks and we got another three feet to clear. If we had known, considering what a lame winter it was, we would have cleared the deck and made it snow more often. You can no longer see the first floor of our house. Enough melted, but for a day you couldn’t see the second floor either! And MK really did hike up there and ski down. Being a grown up rules, because I’m pretty sure our moms would NOT have approved.

We skied like crazy (not just off the roof). I learned from sweet hubby how to pop up in my turns and get through the powder, and he took me to some parts of Deer Valley I wasn’t good enough for until now. It was amazing! Until the second day I came home, used the potty, and fell down the stairs after my legs collapsed! It was a little funny.

Stretching has helped. And the work reminded me I’m not getting my act together getting back on the workout train. It’s about time. I’ve been doing a little weightlifting at home, but it makes me so hungry I’ve put back on all the tons of weight I’d lost while sick… might be time to start running, hiking and biking. Heading to multiple pool time Vegas vacations should be motivating me, but there’s a lot of other stuff going on.

We have a friend coming in to town, then Momm and brother. MK is doing too much trying to make the place ultra nice for them, he’s such a sweetie. We’re almost done – pictures tomorrow – with the master bedroom fireplace gutting and wall making. We redid and painted our front closet, and MK finally cleaned up the seal-ing around our front door. Right now, our house is a maroon color, with burnt red-orange trim, and our front door is BRIGHT FOREST GREEN. Although I’ve been told SB might not think it’s our house if I change it, we’ve been doing so much house work and her mommy’s so preggers they haven’t seen it in forever anyway! SO – what color can I paint the door? I was so close to going with that grey blue I’ve been putting everywhere else, but it really doesn’t match. Then I thought black, but it’ll never stay clean. MK wants white, same problem. Anyone have any amazing idears? (R on purpose, in honor of my mommy.)

I might paint my office, since it’ll be the first time someone’s using it as a 2nd guest room, and hopefully once Momm shows up she can help me make some final decorating and designing decisions. It’s so impossible for us to decide – we spent an hour in Lowe’s looking at lighting after I spent two hours on the internet not finding anything for our master overhead light, dining room overhead light, and basement hall sconce. Ugh!

The problem is totally that as soon as you commit to something and spend the money, you see something better that you wish you could get. If you’ve ever updated part of your house I bet you’d agree with me. We picked colors for our basement redesign, only to see an HGTV episode of a room with those colors and decide it sucked. 🙂

No Foolin’

Today was the least exciting April Fools’ Day ever! I think my brother tried to make a joke on his FB page, and that was about it. MK went to a car auction that was a bust and took all day.

In boring house news, we have a nice floor where a hole used to be in our master bedroom, and MK will be starting on the walls this week.

In fun event news, we went to a parade and saw all the Olympic athletes with Park City ties the other night…

here’s a ton of pictures! I took these on my phone and am pretty impressed with the quality.
