Postponing Christmas

It has been a little slow around here, and I’m assuming everyone is off decking their halls and mistletoeing each other…but I’ve got more serious things to worry about than why you’re too busy to visit Somegosoftly. As a matter of fact, Christmas is being postponed over here. Myriad of reasons including:

1. Company. It’s going to be a madhouse now until March, so I’ve got to be prepared.

2. This skiing thing. Seriously. I’m kicking my own butt. See #1. The company needs to know that I too can make it down a mountain. After my big spill it’s like starting from scratch.

3. Discounts. MK and I have a plan to spend X dollars on each other in the days following Christmas, then repeatedly brag to all of you how much more we got than you sillies that shopped normal prices.

4.Might be snowed in. Expecting a foot or two starting tomorrow.

No idea who made this interesting little pic:

Oh Christmas Tree

The whole thing – over 8 feet tall, with 4 looong strings of lights, and bows and ribbon for decorations, under 50$!

The trees at most vendors were 80$ for 6 feet – we got this one at the grocery store for 35$.

Yay Bargain Christmas!

PS – It’s hard to do them justice, Christmas Trees this lovely are hard to photograph.

Mall Madness

Did I totally forget to tell you? Oh my. Well, there is a giant Tanger Outlet in my backyard. It’s the only one in Utah, as a matter of fact. We’ve been quite a bit. Wednesday before Thanksgiving all the sales had begun. We got MK some sweaters and I got a new pair of jeans. Some of the sales were over 50% off.

Thursday night MK and I played video games until midnight. Upon noticing that it was midnight, we decided to take a peek and see if people were heading to the mall for the sales that started at midnight. We took a back road from our house and decided that the economy can’t really be that bad. Either that, or it’s soooo bad that sales at the outlet were the logical answer.

There were cars parked up and down the street. People that had taken the wrong exit were stuck in the roundabouts. The parking lot was full. The store lines were long, both inside and out. We didn’t bring the camera but if you’ve ever done Black Friday morning shopping I’m sure it’s similar. It was a zoo. We laughed as we turned around and headed home.

The next morning MK checked the ads and found a few things he was able to order online. We did go to WalMart and scored a dozen DVDs and some PS2 games for 2$. Good stuff to have for the winter! The store was fairly tossed, and fairly busy. Quite a few shopping carts were balancing flatscreen TVs.

When I lived at home Dadd and I would go to the mall Christmas Eve to make fun of the last minute shoppers. It was almost just as fun to have MK take me to see the late night/early morning Black Friday madness.

Thanksgiving Reminiscing

Thanksgiving this year got me thinking about the fact that I’ve been doing this a while. I always question the cheesy autobiographical nature it tended to take on – but right now I can be thankful. Even MK has noted there is a bit of worth to being able to check here to recall our adventures.

Here’s two years of Thanksgiving’s at my fingertips.

November 2006

November 2007

I especially enjoyed the Thankful Challenge that I participated in last year.

I can easily remembering sharing Thanksgiving with my in laws and my crazy new San Diego friends. This year, we’ll be with great friends in Utah. Yet another day to write about, share with you, my friends and family, and make you a part of right here. So this year, I’m most thankful that you stop by, that you participate, that you keep me blogging.

October

October is a hilarious month around here. By around here, I mean around me. MK’s birthday. CH’s birthday, and now BB’s birthday. Pumpkins are exciting, and this post that I put up last year is very popular. I can’t tell what it is that you search on google that pulls me up, but I had more hits last October to this blog that all of the first year’s worth of posts.

So before I even put anything up today, I see this giant arch up in my blog stats. The market may be tanking, but my value is epic this month. 😉 Somegosoftly likes October, it creates self worth.

We are taking a trip tomorrow, a trip that has a funny story. The last time I tried to do this trip, I canceled it all and virtually moved out. For a reason we no longer remember. But still. This trip is a dangerous trip. So since we’ve never been on this trip, we’ve decided to do what no one’s ever done after flying somewhere they’ve never been: nothing.

That’s right, for MK’s BIG ***3-0*** we are planning on doing nothing. He hates sight seeing. Not gonna do it. He hates touristy stuff. Not gonna do it. He hates big fancy dinners. Not gonna have one. We got a giant GIANT room and we are going to sit in it. It has a media center fancier than anything. We might play Xbox all week. Who knows. We have some friends that we’ve tried to prepare. As in “you can come hang out, but if you’re gonna do stuff, well, we aren’t.” They seem down, so we might hang in PJ pants and drink wine and eat birthday cake and watch football – well, I might sneak in football if MK naps. I’m almost jealous of this birthday.

Collegiate Memory Inspired Antics

I’m not gonna lie or sugar coat this situation. I in a moment of insanity forgot my friend’s birthday. Her 30th birthday. SB, my college roommate, had to go so far as to call me and remind me I missed it and I suck. To be fair, we were planning a Mexican getaway to honor the event, and its cancellation is what prompted my forgetfulness. It’s not like I didn’t have it written down. Also in my defense (ask my mom), not having anything to do all day makes them all blur together and oftentimes I just honestly don’t know what day (week, month) it is.

Anyway, to apologize, I got SB here to SD. Her arrival late Friday was pretty exciting, as I hadn’t seen her since our road trip through Denver to Seattle. We commenced celebratory drinking at the La Jolla Brewhouse, ran kicking and screaming from stupid old Jose’s, and did a little late night drive through La Jolla Cove, calling it an early night so we could make the most of the long weekend. Did we, and how.

Saturday morning we had some technical difficulties with the car, as in we had to have it jumped. We walked the Cove again, stopped in at Karl Strauss (another brewery, already)

Mmmmm

Mmmmm

for a sampler and a Bloody Mary, and then meandered to Porkyland, our tourist coming armed with plans had suggested this place – it was great Mexican food.

Car fixed we drove to Balboa Park and paid 4$pp for the lamest Japanese Garden (it’s really 100ft. long) and wandered a bit taking pictures. When we were read to go, the car was not. Seriously, stupid car…so loving Super Husband let us cab it to Old Town while he waited (and waited) for the solution, which was determined to be a new car battery.

SB suggested the Jolly Boy Saloon in Old Town since she wanted absinthe. (She does not mess around). What I saw and we chose first was a sight which my eyes have never before been blessed with:

Wheel, Fire, Beer-Margarita

Great Inventions: Wheel, Fire, Beer-Margarita

Yes, a beer IN A GIANT MARGARITA. Or, a GIANT MARGARITA with A BEER in it. Whichever you prefer. It was AWESOME. Due to it’s size, we shared it responsibly. Then shared the absinthe. Then we were totally roasted. It was, maybe 2pm. We wolfed down some ice cream (yup, still gorging on that) then husband picked us up. We made it to Del Mar just in time to bet on the last two horse races before – seriously, she planned the whole trip, basically – we set off to the infield to attend the last concert of the summer Del Mar series that SB had discovered: DEVO.

Seriously. DEVO.

Seriously. DEVO.

As you can imagine, it was pretty hilarious. We topped out at about 30 minutes of rediculousness and headed home to clean up to head to the Gaslamp District. We had some dinner, some more drinks, and gussied up. I know it was a holiday weekend, but I’d never seen the bars so busy. There were lines everywhere, except (thankfully) Mr. Tiki’s, our staple starter bar. From there we hit up The Field, staple number 2, and some super cool new bar I forgot the name of.

Sunday morning we headed up to Mt. Soledad, then found the SDSU library and Dr. Suess statue (that was mostly for me). We went to the Gliderport, where it was super windy and there were a ton of paragliders out. We tried to get to Lahaina’s in PB but again, the beach was more crowded than I’ve ever seen it, even more than 4th of July. We changed-of-plans it right to Cass St., who serves up 4$ rice vodka spicy Bloody Mary’s. Are you seeing the theme yet? Back to our pool for some more drinks at sunset, a fashion photo shoot, and then off to the Pink Elephant, a pretty great neighboorhood hipster theme bar.

We got convinced by running club to meet up at Bourbon, where there was, no lie, a foam party. I tried my best to stay away from the madness, but we did have some fun dancing. We got home and totally ran through the parking garage, pool room, and etc. making messes like we were 19 again. Good times.

The next morning, hangover free, miraculously, we hit the Cove for snorkeling and the Shores for Body Boarding and Bahia Don Bravo’s for lunch all before getting SB on the plane ride home. We managed to squeeze quite a bit in.

Here’s the rest of the silly photos.

For A Minute

You might think that with that view I keep bragging about – you remember, the one with the ocean where I can watch the dolphins and whales and walk to the baby seals and lay out in the sun and get tan – that I wouldn’t leave so much. We’ve got some buddies that keep letting us know we should stay in San Diego for a minute. But who has time for that?

TB and I had a girls day. We skied better than ever in the universe, and had the most fun. I can’t explain to you how not good at things I typically am. This is the first thing I’ve gotten better and better at. When BIL and his GF showed up, we had a blast. We skied our favorite, Deer Valley, and then The Canyons, which while more “out in nature” feeling, was comparatively poorly maintained. But it was something new. I learned why everyone hates snowboarders, why you should wear a helmet, and just how much fun it can be flying as fast as you can down a mountain listening to your headphones. I’m trying to force someone to spend our winter months in Park City next year.

TB and I went out for a lunch and I got a fortune that read “Seize from every moment its uniqueness, especially this week”. I’m going to call that the most appropriate fortune ever, and extend it another week.

KD is already telling me what fun I’m missing. So I’m off to sit out on my balcony for a minute, get some sun and watch those waves, because tomorrow is the start of a whole new week of fantastic-ness. As much as I miss Austin and my friends, I am also soooo excited to just go and see some bands and hang out. It’ll be like a brake-vacation.

For Your Amusement

Happy Valentine’s. And if you’re not that into it, here’s something to cheer you up:

Anti Valentine’s Despair Bittersweets.

I remember what I did last year as if it was yesterday. In keeping with that mistress-seeking tradition, MK and I celebrated Valentine’s the night before. He took me out all day shopping and then we went out for a Chinese dinner that I was owed from my birthday, and fortunately since I’m only going to do that once a year, it was great.

Executive Summation

This time last year, I was traveling a foreign land as I celebrated my holidays. This year, what felt even more like a foreign land was in fact, just Southern California.

For three of the last four Thanksgivings, I have kept company of strangers and friends rather than family. While it may not please family to hear it, it’s a tradition of new things that I hope to continue.

For my last two Christmases, I’ve experienced something completely different. Last Christmas Eve, I ate a cup of noodles in the middle of nowhere, New Zealand, and watched tv. This Christmas Eve consisted of “Tamales, Tequila, and Tejano” and opening gifts at midnight. I can only say that the part of my family I have too long over looked made this holiday celebration one of my most memorable.

My Christmas days have included walks on the beach for the last two years, another tradition I wouldn’t complain about continuing. A little pool and darts was more hilarious to be doing Christmas day, and a problem I’d been carrying too long resolved itself for once and for all. It was a great feeling. My friends and family pouring in and teaching me about how able they are to help themselves has made me learn about being a more comfortable hostess, one that wants everyone to always be welcome in her home, whether it’s a mansion or a one room trailer.

Seeing the Holiday Bowl from 4 rows back made me realize how good I have it all over again. The new friends I’ve met make me less scared to put myself out there, to try to be accepted by strangers. And throwing such a diverse group together only gives you more memories to laugh about (ZDL, anyone?)

New Year’s put me smack in the middle of another realization, that without a certain core group of acquaintances (AS-H) in particular, I would have not only never met my husband, but also none of these particularly close friends I know I’m never going to lose.

It’s been a good year here. I can’t wait to see what the next one brings. Except for getting older so soon, I could totally wait on that…
