Scaring Mom

Apparently if you fall and hit your head on the side even if you have a helmet, you can get whiplash. So after a fun day of skiing and a fun night of bars, you can wake up the next morning immobile.

Good news is I’ll be fine, but today watching tv stuck in bed was not fun. BB and TB took super good care of me and cooked us all the best dinner ever so I had a free pass to rest up and heal. Typical me that this happens with company but I almost think he was expecting it 😉 . I’ll be on bed/wine/heatpad rest until further notice…

Deal With It

So the BIL is here. And I’m exhausted. Disclaimer:  I know that there are a few of you anxious to hear about every mountain adventure, the ones (yay! – my favorites 🙂 ) that have trips planned out here and that can’t wait for skiing. I also know that there are some people that will check the site again in six months and hope I ended up somewhere they are more interested in. But this skiing thing is new and fascinating to me so while I’ll try to break it up a bit you can expect more of the same.

BIL made it in right before the snow. It was already coming down when e woke up and it didn’t stop until just a bit ago. After a delicious breakfast (if I do say so myself) we had to really do a number on the driveway to get out. Apparently there is a problem with the snowblower. That is going to need to be taken care of. Soon.

There are too many funny little things that happen when these to men get together; let’s just leave it at an incredible day. We skiied our first full day and even got to meet up with TB, BB, and family. Deer Valley got so much snow they were able to open up a ton more runs. And I don’t care what you hear, I tore up some deep fresh pow. (That’s what they call it around here…)

BIL is our test run. We are playing in the snow. And finding the good bars open on weeknights. And I’m trying new recipes. So when everyone comes, they’ll be welcomed with our best. Fortunately, rumor has it BIL is getting the best. I like not have to try too hard ;).

While We Were Out

This wasn’t as much snow as they predicted, but it was enough to not be able to get the car in the driveway! MK was a darling and got us in safely. We’re headed out to ski shortly and KK gets in tonight for the whole week. They’ve opened up more runs and we’re looking forward to having a great time!

Three Days In

The first day we went out I made it down one green run twice. I had kind of forgotten how to ski like a rockstar. It was humbling and frustrating and a little funny. As a matter of fact, I fell down the very first moment as I was putting my skis on. It had me afraid it was going to be a long season.

But Sunday we went out and tried it again. And I got better. And more confident. And remembered what I think is the most important rule of skiing, it’s easier the faster you go. But something didn’t feel quite right, even though my legs weren’t completely worn out, I was more sore than I expected. Sore of the feet. My ski gear is all new this year, and I had a feeling the boots that I was so excited about were to blame. I did, however, get about 7 runs in – and a picture with Santa.

There was also a celebrity ski event going on that we tried to check out. I did my best and think I might have seen Dennis Quaid and Matthew Modine. But they were in ski gear, made it a little tricky. The event airs on CBS so we’ll see how I did. This is a pic of the tent they all hid in and up to the right the run they skied down. Rumor has it Heidi Klum fell and they made it easier.

So after taking Monday off to let the real snow accumulate, we headed out again today. MK had me rent a different boot, and it made all the difference. Not only did I ski the steepest blue, I almost murdered a few trees. Flying around like a nut makes you run in to things. It was a blast. I felt great and ready to ski every day. Even now I’m not all achy and stiff like usual. So sad to say it might be goodbye boots. And goodbye Christmas presents – new boots in the middle of winter are not cheap. I’m wondering if I should just suffer. I could always just cut my big toe off…

It’s Gorgeous (Trust Me)

I had planned a post today about how freaked out we are that Deer Valley (our Winter Playground we pushed back homes and children to pay for season passes to) opens Dec 6th – that’s two days from now – and there was no snow. It was pretty funny, really.

I had to delete it, it turned in to a lie. Thankfully, it has been snowing all day. I haven’t seen weather like this since being a kid in CT – and it’s so much more kickass when there’s a point to it. Up there we were just suffering, here I get to ski all over it. These giant flakes are serving a purpose this winter.

So I’m just a little frustrated because I wanted to share adorable pictures of me shoveling the driveway and goofing around, and the snowfall. It’s really beautiful here right now. But you’re just going to have to take my word for it. No matter what I do I can’t get the pictures to come out. Like, with snowflakes. You’re just going to have to imagine me, cozied up in a sweater, under a throw blanket, by the fire, looking out the picture windows.

Let It Snow Already

I’ve got the boots. I’ve got new ski pants. TB and I have sweet Orage coats. And it’s 65 degrees. I’m beginning to wonder if this is really the same place I came to before with all that snow. Maybe I was mistaken. If I were home alone, I’d wear the full get up around the house. All day. I’m trying to be somewhat of an appropriate guest. Drinking and eating all the B’s goodies is bad enough. No need to let them know I’m also crazy.

We’ve played at the park and gone out walking and seen the sights. We’ve been working out on the super fancy brand new PreCor elliptical that BB bought TB. Like, we should be skiiiiny. Again. Already. It’s been two days…

I’m full of anticipation for moving and company and ski days and Cranium nights (yeah, still waiting to crack that open). There’s that big life lesson about enjoying the present and not spending too much time expecting what’s to come. But you might have sensed from the theme of posts this week I’m having a little trouble with that one.

I went through all the road trip pictures and decided it’s best if I spare you. I’m terrible at that job. Here’s us just being cute.

Third Time’s A Charm

Remember when I startled you with this announcement?

Then confounded you with this one?

Well, we’ve been in San Diego a year, which is longer than we thought at first, but at the same time, after seeing the winter we had to see it in summer, and what a difference there was (winter was better!). All the same, last winter we made so many ski trips that we decided it would be easier to spend a whole season skiing. Having great friends permanently residing there doesn’t hurt either. If you can believe it, they ran around looking for the perfect place for us. I am so blessed.

So at some point around the end of October, we will be moving to PARK CITY UTAH!

Good news for everyone around this site that knows me, you’ll have a free place to stay when you come on your winter ski trip! You know I’m expecting you all to come see me – and bring some good booze in your luggage…I’m not gonna be able to handle that watered down Mormon crap without you. 😉

For A Minute

You might think that with that view I keep bragging about – you remember, the one with the ocean where I can watch the dolphins and whales and walk to the baby seals and lay out in the sun and get tan – that I wouldn’t leave so much. We’ve got some buddies that keep letting us know we should stay in San Diego for a minute. But who has time for that?

TB and I had a girls day. We skied better than ever in the universe, and had the most fun. I can’t explain to you how not good at things I typically am. This is the first thing I’ve gotten better and better at. When BIL and his GF showed up, we had a blast. We skied our favorite, Deer Valley, and then The Canyons, which while more “out in nature” feeling, was comparatively poorly maintained. But it was something new. I learned why everyone hates snowboarders, why you should wear a helmet, and just how much fun it can be flying as fast as you can down a mountain listening to your headphones. I’m trying to force someone to spend our winter months in Park City next year.

TB and I went out for a lunch and I got a fortune that read “Seize from every moment its uniqueness, especially this week”. I’m going to call that the most appropriate fortune ever, and extend it another week.

KD is already telling me what fun I’m missing. So I’m off to sit out on my balcony for a minute, get some sun and watch those waves, because tomorrow is the start of a whole new week of fantastic-ness. As much as I miss Austin and my friends, I am also soooo excited to just go and see some bands and hang out. It’ll be like a brake-vacation.
