Regarding My Last Post

I wrote it hadn’t snowed since the night we moved in…

and look what we got overnight and in to today! It was 2 when I woke up. I think it’s about 6 right now. Degrees.

All you really have to do to make it snow is send me out to shovel. It started coming down right after I got in. Planning on taking my new skis from the ski swap to get tuned as soon as the roads look more doable. Every time I hear a car go by I peek out the window nervous about pending disaster. I don’t think it’s time for me to start driving in this just yet!

And yes, the flag can stay. We decided not to burn it after all.

Exploring Utah

I almost forgot to tell you that we went exploring a couple weekends ago! We drove from Park City to West Wendover, on the Nevada-Utah border. To get there we passed the Great Salt Lake

and the Bonneville Salt Flats.

Wendover, like any Nevada border town, is a little gambling hole with 5 or 6 casinos. We read online reviews (MK did, on his phone) that the Nugget and the one across the street – already forget the name. It was LOUD:

We ate, gambled pennies, and watched football until we were bored. We decided to take the car to the salt flats and get crazy…doing doughnuts at a mile per hour – I even drove. Our car isn’t really the salt flat type, but it was really neat to see and we’ll definitely have to go back with some company and a faster funner car. Of course MK took great pics and you get cell phone ones. Sigh.

Wildlife

We had a pretty decent storm yesterday.

We were just laying low and working around the house watching the snow fall. Having all the windows open, we saw two cool things.

First pets were some birds I’ve never seen before. Large, blue and black with giant plumes on their heads and long tails. Yay for husband filling the bird feeder! Every time he tried to take a picture, they moved to the back of the bird feeder. Must have been shy.

Then, slightly eclipsing the birds, were two moose – looked like a baby and momma, that chilled out pretty close to the house! They stuck around for most of the day and ate through our back yard and left right before dark.

Took Ten Minutes

Well, we finally got the day that I was waiting for – the first snowfall in our house! Let’s replay how it went down:

First, I called TB to see if it was snowing at HER house or if it was just a flurry for my part of Park City. She confirmed it was not just us.

Second, without even waiting for the cable guy to finish inter-webbing the house, the oven was on and the cookies were baking. Fortunately every window in the house was already open so we could watch the snow.

Third, I made MK have a moment. He hates forced moments. But it was the FIRST snowfall we were seeing from OUR window. Moment.

Fourth, plugged in the little Christmas tree Grandma gave me my first winter away from home. It’s not too early when you live in the MOUNTAINS.

Fifth, we went to the grocery store for provisions. (And no, I didn’t forget about the cookies, they were done).

Sixth, Chili for dinner, heat turned up.

I am so in love with winter it hurts. I keep switching on the back deck light to see the snow as it picks up.

That Was Easy

How many of you have bought a house? The be all end all exciting bit was too quick! I was all ready to go get my hair done and put on a dress and hire someone to take pictures. But it wasn’t prom. We did get drinks and MK even got a cookie, but the whole deal was maybe 15 minutes. And done. House.

We did the walkthrough, and I have to tell you, I am super in love with this house. Not just because it is about 11 minutes from the closest of THREE SKI RESORTS, but it’s adorable. It’s warm and cozy and clean and pretty. Yay!

Then we go sign papers. Maybe ten. That was all it took. I have a  copy, I can prove it. The crazy state of Utah is letting us have some land here. I’m not sure what they are thinking.

We went back to the B’s house all anti-climatically, and they were ready to help. Champagne toast! Then it felt like a party. I could tell they were as excited as we were when I asked SB “Guess what we bought today!?!?”, and she screamed “A HOUSE!!!”. Too cute.

TB and I took off to Home Depot pretty much immediately. There are some things we need to do, and I can’t wait to start. MK is convinced it’s the beginning of the end, but I can’t tell if it’s because of the paint colors I picked out or just how much fun we could have if we made all our remodel dreams come true. We totally used to look at other people with Home Depot trips all weekend and laugh. No we’re those guys. I always promised myself I’d embrace each new chapter when the time came. I’m a little afraid MK is going to run back to the beach to lay around. We’ll see…

Second Major Announcement

The reason that I wrote this post was that I was keeping a secret. And having a hard time with it. To be fair, I wasn’t really even keeping the secret from that many people – I told a ton of family and friends. But they’re the ones that like the boring details. I wanted to try as hard as I could to NOT bore you all with those details. But it’s still a big secret, that I can finally tell you:

MK and I are buying a house! In Utah!

(Park City, don’t worry, the cool part!) We couldn’t really announce whether or not we were moving, or where to, until we knew for sure, and actually buying something sure can slow the decision down!

This is something most people do, so YOU might not think it’s THAT big of a deal. But this is us. The gypsies. If you haven’t been around all that long, read some old blog posts. I NEVER thought we’d really settle down*. I thought we’d be living off other people’s things in other people’s homes FOREVER.

The reason I kept the secret until now is that DUDE – home buying totally sucks. I wouldn’t be in a rush to do it again. And without giving you all the details of my personal business, we should not be having a hard time. We’re all, “We want this one, here’s some money, when can we move in?” But nooo. We have to of course deal with a thousand people that we can’t convince to get on the same page. Ugh. If you’ve been there, you know. And it might not be that shocking to you. But I’m not going to blog about trying to put offers in and wait on inspections and all that. (Yet another thing I’m bored about if you post it on Facebook). We had at one time in Austin been through the process on a dozen different houses and never ended up with one, so I didn’t see much of a point.

As a matter of fact – we don’t have keys in our hand yet. Our lease was up before we could close so we are yet again crashing at the B’s!

Here’s a picture of this time around:

Fall 09

Compared with last years for a laugh:

It may look similar – TB thought it was LESS stuff, until I reminded her we’ve also filled half their garage with our ski gear, and anything that won’t freeze.

Oh and by the way, here’s the gorgeous snow we got on our first day here:

Yay!

*We’re not really settling down. We’re going to live in San Diego every summer and here every winter – at least – that’s the plan!

Winter Wins

Dude, winter rules. I left San Diego during one of those sunny and 75 degree days I told you were going to stick around. That’s why people love San Diego. I get it.

Then I fly back to Park City (if you’re counting this is the third trip). And it’s SNOWING. On September 30th.

Tell me what you’re thinking. “That sucks”? “Lame”? “Brr”? I’m thinking: “Awesome”. It was crazy. I wanted to stay! TB drove me to the airport and announced that she really loved winter. And I had to agree.

Dooce twittered that her daughter said something like “think of all the hot cocoa we get to drink”! I’m right there with her. Yay winter, snow, hot cocoa, skiing, and yes, even shoveling.

Don’t get me wrong, the beach is great. But if I have to pick what gets me more excited, I think I’m going for the cold weather. Besides, the beach is easier to visit. All you need is a bikini.
