Car Stereo (Wars) Mashup

Check it out! Car Stereo (Wars) created a mashup for the lineup to Austin City Limits 2008. Too cool. They haven’t even made a formal announcement yet, but I’m following the comments here to determine with everyone else’s help what all is in there. Listen to all the Car Stereo (Wars) music if you haven’t before, it’s great for workouts, as KD taught me long ago.

Who knows, maybe if I’m good I’ll get to go to ACL this year. The deal we’re trying to make is two music festivals a year, one always will be SXSW. Last year we had Sasquatch. LC had the great idea us ladies keep the good times rolling.

UPDATE: Here’s the complete lineup.

One Of The Girls

Are you one of the girls? One of the girls that had the posters, the tapes, the sweatshirt, the hot pink sleeping bag? Did you write letters? Join the fan club? You can’t help but feel a little nostalgic. I don’t care what it makes me to admit this gets me giddy, and I’m smiling on the inside:

SXSW Edumacation

Last year, I posted this hilarious list as my post SXSW wrap up . It held true this year as well. In addition, in Vice style, I’ll show you my personal Dos and Don’ts. We’re getting pretty good at this, my friends and I. I mean, we managed this with me as a quasi non local this time around. Add yours in the comments if I missed some…

Do:

  • Bring more band aids. Those blisters aren’t battle scars you can brag about.
  • Wear almost whatever you want. Everyone else is going to. Just don’t expect to ever get it really clean again.
  • Act like a rock star. Why not?
  • Buy the biggest sunglasses you can find. It’ll be your little secret how wasted you are.
  • Announce “That would make a good band name” any time it applies. Never gets old.
  • Tell everyone that hasn’t been to SXSW that you can’t really explain it. They wouldn’t understand.
  • Force everyone you know to listen to the new music you discovered. It’s your duty.
  • Create more options than you have. Make your own party.

Don’t:

  • Listen to the radio for at least two weeks. It will only disappoint.
  • Wear Palestinian head scarves around your neck. I’m sorry, that one doesn’t cut it.
  • Make excuses for the post SXSW week depression. It’s yours to own.
  • Eat anything healthy for a week, or try to work out. Your body won’t be ready.
  • Try to talk about Vampire Weekend. You’re already too late.
  • Go see any bands with raccoon tails in their pants. Or no pants. Just trust this one.
  • Tell people you’ll write about it daily on your blog. You won’t.
  • Forget to reserve this week next year: SXSW March 13 – 22, 2009. Until then…

Life-Changing Stuff

This is a great quote that I found recently, from PJ Harvey:

‘The world doesn’t need any more art that’s just alright’, says Polly Harvey. ‘It only needs mind-blowing, inspirational, life-changing stuff’.

That’s motivation to create something amazing no matter what it is.

ACL Memories

About this time last year, I started a blog. And I started doing fun things. With friends. Now, I still have blog, I still do fun things, but my best friends are in Austin, and I am in Seattle.

The biggest weekend that I missed this past 6 months certainly was this past weekend: Austin City Limits. This is my little tribute to the memory. I heard great things about this year from friends and only wish I was there! I went back today and found how I made a schedule, then told you all about

I hope you enjoyed this little flashback. There’s nothing like the real thing, and well, I wasn’t there. But if you must know, here’s a couple peeps you can peruse for stories:

Friends Help Friends

You’ll remember I met these guys HERE, and it turns out they are friends of other friends too! There’s only FOUR days left, and they’d appreciate your help at a chance to play at ACL. I’ve voted every day, now I want you to, too!

Block Party

Did you know that Harvey Danger, of 1998 “Flagpole Sitta” fame, was a Seattle band? Me neither. They are apparently still together, as well. I will be in their vicinity tonight at the

South Lake Union Block Party. Click on the link, the poster is cool.

I’m going for the cheap (free!) local food, Picoso, and the Mutt-Mazing Race. But Harvey Danger might just get a hold on me. How can I resist?

SXSW Was Dangerous, I Was Right!

“With no less than three of the biggest after parties at this year’s SXSW abruptly shut down, it’s no wonder that we’ve been hearing all sorts of crazy conspiracy theories. But much as we’d love to blame this year’s spate of buzzkilling closures on curmudgeonly old muckety-mucks, the evidence seems to point to something far less interesting: lack of permits. At least that was the case with FactoryPeople‘s Thursday night rager, “La Chic Disco Boum,” and the IHeartComix/Triple 5 Soul Friday night “Blow Out,” both of which were shut down by fire marshals not long after they began. Vice Magazine‘s end-of-SXSW-orgy, on the other hand, succumbed under the collective weight of its hard-partying hipster clientèle — literally, as pieces of the main balcony at the Elks Lodge collapsed. Miraculously, no one was injured.” -from the austinist.com

We missed Factory People AND iheartcomix, and don’t feel so bad we didn’t go wait in line if they ended up shut down. The Vice party absolutely cracked me up. The story was, after the guest list was full, you could be awarded an entry if you wrote them a begging haiku. Not only that, but the party was moved from the original location the night of. And they still managed to break things!

These are things I’m not sorry I missed, and further reason I’m convinced we had the best experience ever!

SXSW Aftermath

Cyanide & Happiness

The illness is real. I’m one of many Austinites with “Post SXSW Alcoholic Binge Disorder”.

Here’s a glimpse of the symptoms:

  • Looking in cupboards for booze
  • Asking if you ‘need a wristband’ before you go in anywhere
  • Ringing in the ears
  • Sore feet
  • No food in house
  • Half empty water bottles appear to be breeding in house and car
  • Purse full of stickers and flyers
  • The shakes
  • Missing shoes
  • Greasy hair
  • Putting on night club clothes instead of getting ready for bed
  • Spending all day reading blog coverage and streaming new music

Those are just the beginning. And there’s no cure I’m aware of…

SXSW Night (And Day!) Seven

Bloody Mary. Those two words were music to my ears – cliche appropriate due to the ringing also in my ears by now – Saturday at 12 at La Feria with KD. Anxious to head back downtown, we met everyone out at Red7. Again, with some amazing luck, we made it in the door right before the 2 hour line planted itself there for the rest of the afternoon. Words I also loved hearing, in response to “Who are we here to see?”: “It’s the David Cross showcase.” Perfect.

We saw the bands Deerhunter, The Ponys, The Black Lips, and The Walkmen. We got to see David Cross perform, as well as Brain Posehn and (I think, but may have to edit this list later) Bob Odenkirk, Zack Galifianakis, and the girl that does the news on SNL that isn’t Tina Fey.

Here’s David Cross. I saw him listening and performing, my friends E and P took a pic with him (I’m so jealous!):

I really like the music that Deerhunter played, but I felt awful that I could not take my eyes off the lead singer. “The skinniest man on the face of the Earth,” claim the MySpacers. “He suffers from Marfan syndrome, try not to insult him,” others retort. The 1 in 5,000 Americans affected are typically tall, thin, and at risk of heart problems. Source(s): MySpace, March of Dimes, pitchforkmedia.com.

The Ponys were decent, The Black Lips better, and The Walkmen, whom I’ve seen before, couldn’t really project fully enough the perfect way the vocals and the vintage instruments compliment each other. Outside seemed to be tough, and with 800 bands and all that equipment, I’m sure the sound guys were toast.

I did get to have my photo taken with Brian Posehn:

All that work drinking and rocking made us hungry. We went for sushi

sushi.jpg And got a ‘boatload’:sushi2.jpg

Here’s one more Frost Bank Tower pic:

From there we were headed to a party that ended up being canceled, so we re-routed our group to Firehouse, to see DJ Chicken George.

fire.jpg fun.jpg

djcg.jpgfun3.jpg

It wasn’t like we forgot about St. Patrick’s Day either, there was plenty of that everywhere.

fun2.jpg

That about wrapped it up. We made it out each day, and now it is time to relax. We’ll all be going through party and drink withdrawals, and missing live music. I think it is safe to say that SXSW has been one of the best things I’ve finally been able to experience. It opened my eyes to so much new music to listen to, so much to think about, and so many new friends that I’m still in overload. I didn’t leave the house today, and it’s going to be tough to get back on schedule.

It’s cute that we all make jokes about the mad influx of hipsters, but our city has to embrace this week, this party we throw. It’s that good.
