Getting Back In Shape

For over a year, I updated you regularly on my workouts as a way to hold myself accountable. It was helpful to keep a calendar of my fitness schedule, a food diary, and a record of all the times I broke my diet and fitness plans. That was a while ago now. I liked working out in Seattle in the great weather. In San Diego last year, the gym was a must, everyone was so fit. In Park City, skiing made me want to drink beer, eat carbs, and sleep.

Skiing was a workout in and of itself that prevented me from gaining any weight, but I did lose most of the upper body muscles I had grown the year before. So far my workout routine since coming back to San Diego has consisted of not eating (especially no carbs) and not drinking any beer. I broke my diet yesterday with the most delicious piece of pizza on the planet. I have started dreaming about pasta. I just can’t live without it.

So anorexic skinny is not going to work for me. It’s going to have to be exercise. Believe me, I’m not excited about it. It’s just not something I enjoy, especially by myself. I’m trying my best to get hubby out on the nice new cruisers we got, but he’s always so tired after that job thing he has to do every day. We didn’t join a gym because our building has one. He’s seen it twice. I don’t know where it is.

MK tells me all I need to do is work out 6 hours a day to get my old muscles back in a month. I have a feeling it’s going to take 30 minutes a day for the rest of my life. Meh.

So Sous Me

We have some friends here that don’t cook. At all. So of course when I invited one of them over to see the new place I opted to grace them with a home-cooked meal. There are a few things that I cook very well. They are usually dishes that are hard to mess up, staples that I put my own personal touch on by making slight changes. But who feels like boring same old same old, right?

I learned to cook sort of through the restaurants. I liked the guys that created the evening special out of whatever there was too much of, but made it delicious. What I never was good at was following a recipe. But I tried the other night, and made a Balsamic Vinegar Chicken recipe I found online. I followed it very closely.

I stir fried veggies according to their stir fry directions. The chicken marinated well and was super moist, but the recipe was put online by a lady who admitted she was sick of eating “chicken that didn’t taste like anything”. Well, lady, your chicken didn’t taste like much either. We decided a sauce of some sort would have helped. My stir fry veggies got wimpy instead of crispy. I don’t know what I did wrong. Of course I didn’t take a picture, there wasn’t much to see. Here’s hoping my friends aren’t all “No thanks!” the next time I invite them over!

A Great Thanksgiving

You read it right, and I’m not crazy. You see, we came to a fun decision today in the SGS household. MK’s favorite holiday meal is pretty much always a carb filled Thanksgiving – turkey, potatoes, stuffing, rolls. We don’t vary it. So today at our Thanksgiving style Easter dinner, we realized Easter has a lot to do with Thanksgiving – and that we would love to give thanks for all our blessings all the time.

We have so much to be thankful for, Thanksgiving is going to be more frequent around here. We’re going to have a big sit down dinner focused on thankfulness once a month. It might be the only time I’m allowed all those goodies! 🙂

How hilarious and cool will we be if we have kids? “Mom, can I go to the SGS house this week for dinner?” “Why?” “It’s Thanksgiving.” “No, it’s June.” “They have Thanksgiving once a month!”

But it’s not about being cool, or the food, I promise. It’s a little more making sure we connect. With just the two of us, and both of us trying to not be all about food all the time, dinners have gotten smaller, less formal, and more just to refuel. We think a little more ceremony will be fun.

SomeGoSoftly hopes you all had an amazing Easter and joy filled weekend!

Cupcakes & Design

Here at SomeGoSoftly you will find some of the most discerning readers on the internet – people that care about news and facts and creativity. HA! But you know I love you all dearly – especially lately – it is so busy here! Thanks!

So I want to do you all a favor and let you know about anther place you might like to check out.  I recently reconnected via Facebook with one of the super nicest girls I knew in High School. She’s started herself a website.

Run over there and say hi. Cupcakes & Design already has SomeGoSoftly beat – she knew how to design her own page. If you’re nice to her, she might even help me tinker around over here!

She blogs about design, multimedia, the web, and yummy food. A great combination, since I’m always eating while I’m sitting in front of the laptop! 🙂

Birthday, Week One

Did you think I was kidding? Oh, no friends. When you turn this unexciting of an age and have nothing going on, you need to make your own party. This is a marathon. So my birthday (which was Monday) started last Thursday. I went shopping. At the outlets. And bought stuff. Shoes, a coat, a Coach purse (which I realized I had no need for and returned) and earrings and a headband. Really thrilling stuff. But it was fun just to be out. TB, current love of my life, took me out for Chinese. This will be a tradition.

Friday I skied with MK. It was a blast. I think this was when I figured it out. We came home and got ready for dinner, which we had at the Deer Valley Seafood Buffet, courtesy of my loving mommy. Lest Buffet sound cheesy, make no mistake, I enjoyed more delicious five star cuisine than the previous “X” years of my life. 😉 And, dude, TB (reason for love-of-life status) picked out the most amazing present in the world for me, wait until you see it.

We last minute just had to run out for some drinks, TB (again, love of my life) calling out for shots. Yeehaw. We met some silly LA’ers and had a giant phony one-upping contest. Giggles and more shots. Celebrity hunting.

We totally got catcalled - which is awesome even if it's not your birthday!

I had the funniest time the next morning – Saturday- feeling faintly hungover but somehow still on skis with TB. We were a sight. We also got to see (finally) someone famous here for Sundance. Kira fell right in front of me, and Kevin Bacon had to help her up. It kinda blew her cover. Sunday we skied with Bob. I had to show off. I totally came home and fell in to a coma. We went out for pizza (last junk food of the year…) at a new fantastic restaurant that we all loved. Thanks J!

Monday was this thing called my actual birthday. SKI BIRTHDAYS RULE! My legs were wiped out from the past two awesome days, but beer helped. TB and I were “first beer” at Empire Lodge. Quality. Then we went for round two at Silver Lake. By then, we were golden. I let go of trying to ‘do it right’ and just had fun. My mom AND DAD (MOSTLY DAD) sent me some beautiful flowers (MK got me some you can see in the background too):

MK took me out for drinks and made me a cake. We really had a great night. Yesterday was all about running errands and cleaning – KD And JC get here today! Let Week Two festivities begin!

We Want A Food Network Deal

TB is teaching me the kitchen. There are utensils and concepts I’ve never even heard of, and I used to think that I knew what on earth I was doing. I might even receive a copy of the super secret family book of good cooking, and get tips from TB’s SIL. Wait until you come to my house after THAT. Thanksgiving of deliciousness came out of that book. It might always be Thanksgiving at my house. And we’ll have many many desserts.

Anyways, with all this food magic going on, I wanted to try my own thing. We found a recipe for spring rolls and it only took 3 different grocery stores to find all the ingredients. Here they are:

They tasted even better than they looked, the rolling takes skill. But it was a ton of fun.
