My Yelp Fail

Or, “Need Yelp Help”.

One thing I love about the B’s is that they try anything and everything once. San Diego is so enormous that sometimes MK and I got in to a routine and didn’t often stray from it. So while we were there visiting and in need of some celebrating, we took to our fancy phones to find a place for lunch we’d all never been to before.

I tried Urbanspoon first, an app that is like casino slots, you give it a shake and it picks neighborhood, price, and cuisine, then suggests a restaurant. Our location was yielding too many chain restaurants, so MB suggested I try Yelp.

I was hesitant, I’ve never had a good experience with that site. Maybe I’m doing it wrong, you tell me. He suggested I type in “best margaritas”. The site did indeed pull up a bunch of Mexican restaurants, so we figured we were good. We picked one with great reviews, or many stars or whatever.

We get there, and the food was only okay, and there were no margaritas. They didn’t even sell them. What did I do wrong? Why did Yelp put this place in my results?

I mentioned once before the other problem I have – if you aren’t just telling me the restaurant was clean, and the service was good, how on earth can I relate to you? I clearly didn’t have the same taste buds as the people that loved the place, and voted NO margaritas as ‘best margaritas’.

I kep forgetting that not everyone has a smartphone (get with it already sheeple) but for those of you that do – is anyone experimenting with layar or any other augmented reality app?

Taco Tuesday Torture

You know we are big old fans of Taco Tuesday. We don’t eat out all the time, and when we do it’s virtually impossible for me to finish a huge serving size of anything. So we end up doing small snacky things and appetizers. Taco Tuesday is a cheap way for me to get a little snack and MK to eat as much as he can. We went on the prowl for some yummy cheap eats on Tuesday night. We started at Windy Ridge. I had one 2$ taco, MK had 2$ taquitos, but the margaritas were 4.75. MK remembered Davanza’s did tacos, so we went there, and were told they DON’T do tacos. Pfft.

We had a drink at Easy Street, which was DELICIOUS and NOT CHEAP. MK wanted more food so we tried a new place called Reyes Adobe. They didn’t have a bar. The call themselves a restaurant and margarteria or some crap and didn’t have a bar. In Utah that means you HAVE to order food to get a drink. We should have left. The taco MK got was gross, the tortilla soup I had to get was gross, and the drinks were even more gross.

The soup was like pureed rice in tomato broth. I gagged it was so bad. Kind of a bust, we won’t be going back there! We learned we should have just stayed where we were.

In other news of the day, I thought Momm would like to see what the mountains look like:

And we ran in to TB and the kids and went back to their place with them to visit for a bit. It was super exciting because I forcibly got MK to hold the baby:

We went to O’Shucks and had a drink with MH and watched the Celtics suck. It was kind of a 45 hour day.

Food, Inc.

Wanna lose ten pounds? Watch Food, Inc. We’re going to go broke shopping at Whole Foods but at least it won’t kill us. We watched the movie about a month ago and can’t look at food the same way. We haven’t really been out to eat. We haven’t been able to buy anything that has too many strange unpronounceable ingredients. There is more fruit in this house than ever before. It was hard to break up with Pop Tarts so quickly but a healthy breakfast is so much more filling.

The meat has to say grass fed. The eggs have to tell me that the chickens aren’t all sad and gross like the movie showed. Ugh.  I watched the movie again with JB and she taught me a lot about food and healthy eating, and the better choices that we’re making have already gone a long way. We’ve noticed that we feel better, and I have lost a ton of weight. Seriously.

It probably mostly has to do with the skiing and the shoveling and the snow blowing, but my mindset has also permanently changed. It was a hard movie to sit through, and I agree to some extent with TB that there are some things we’re better off not knowing. But there are other things I’m happy to know, and to try and help, trust me, we’ll be shopping at the Farmer’s Market more and more!

Oatmeal Raisin Cookies

Baked for sweet hubby yesterday. For how good these taste, they aren’t very pretty.

I actually am not as big of a fan, so it’s the perfect food to have in the house, something he eats that I don’t. This might be one of the only things I can think of where that is the case *sigh*.

World’s Best Meatballs

Dude, I can cook something new. I haven’t been cooking much this summer – it’s too hot to turn the stove on! But last week MIL was in town and I grabbed a recipe off the internet that was so simple but delicious I wanted to share it with you. It got rave reviews!

Simply Delicious Meatballs:

  • 2lbs. lean ground beef
  • 2 eggs
  • 1 cup of seasoned bread crumbs
  • 1/4 cup of shredded fresh Parmesan cheese
  • 1 package of Lipton’s Onion Soup Mix (the secret ingredient)
  • salt and pepper and/or a dash of your favorite garlic/onion/Italian blend herbs-
  • ( I use Costco Garlic Mix)

Mix, Roll, Bake at 350 degrees for 30 minutes.

Drool over the deliciousness.

County Fair Round Two

This is the second time we took a trip to the fair. I loved it last year (here’s that post) and since DW would disintegrate in any more direct sun, the fair provided an option since the beach was out. Unfortunately since it was the last weekend, and the day before the holiday that everyone was off from work, we spent an hour getting there. It was worth it when we got our Zucchini Weenie though!

That’s right, they actually listed it in the program as the newest feature food of the fair. The description is a simple one: a hot dog, in a zucchini, fried in batter. It was at the stand that also featured the fried chicken in a Krispy Kreme donut, the fried mushrooms, the fried ice cream cookie sandwich, the fried Twinkie, and the fried Oreos.

Fair food is hilarious. There is no light snack. There is splurge after splurge. Fried food in general, fair food, etc., is a big treat. Well, at least for us. There were people in that line that I’m not sure realized that all their problems could be solved by stepping out of that line. Maybe not solved, but let’s call it a step. There were multiple people in those carts driving themselves because they were too big to walk in that line. I just don’t understand…

My Guilty Habit

We were talking the other night about marriage. We like to think we’re pretty good at it so far. We do a lot of married things, but also are just such good friends we love being around each other. We bicker all the time – we think it’s funny to always disagree, make bets, impose punishments, google things and learn. But we don’t fight. Not a lot. When we do though, is what we were talking about. MK made me realize that I do the most hilarious thing on the planet every time we fight.

I make him let me win, and he can only redeem himself by taking me out to dinner. MK doesn’t cook, so he hates eating out for anything more than a 2$ taco. To him (duh) it’s so much easier to  sit around at home and wait for me to cook.

So the thing is, I don’t let him take me just anywhere. I apparently have repeatedly forced the man to take me to: The Olive Garden.

Let me be very clear about something, I don’t mean to offend anyone with this. We went there growing up every once in a while and it was considered a treat (wait, that just helps the point I’m about to make…). But the fact of the matter is- Olive Garden is pretty white trash. I mean super white trash. There’s got to be a better way to put it than that, but that’s all I can think of. Going there for dinner for me is like watching a really trashy reality TV show. You look around and everyone is drinking White Zinfandel and Blushes (PINK WINE!) and hiding breadsticks in their purses to bring home (guilty) and yelling at the kids as they throw crayons at each other and run around the table screaming their lungs out.

But it can’t really be white trash because every time we eat there we end up with a 40$ bill. For noodles that I TOTALLY could have made at home. That’s why I like it. You make me mad, you let someone else make the pasta. And I get some free entertainment.

Taco Tuesday

Does any other city have this greatness or is this a San Diego thing?

Almost every bar with food does some sort of special on Tuesday. We’ve been hopping around trying to find the best one. Cabo Cantina has a special place in MK’s heart – all you can eat for 5$ goes a long way when you are a bottomless hole. I like their 2 for 1 drinks – that’s a 4$ double tall vodka soda, mmm. Most other Mexican places hook up 2$ tacos, some better than others. We tried a place in Old Town tonight that was really great for a friend’s birthday.
