November 07 Tally

Going in to November was rough. I knew we would be traveling a lot and that writing would stress and hinder me. I did manage to work out a couple times on vacation, which was great. So I’m taking what I could get. I liked that even without working out every day, I didn’t lose all my progress. It shows me I’ve cleared another hurdle.

Final stats on the Calendar of Fitness:

  1. I alternated between running and weights 15 out of 30 days this month. Tolerable.
  2. I have pushed myself with new routines and found new ways to avoid bad food in settings that make it hardest to do so.
  3. I’ve let my running go a little, substituting other cardio activities. I also purchased some weights, a resistance band, and a balance ball, since I missed having these things at home. I think it’s worth the investment.

If you go to a gym that has Life Fitness machines, I’d suggest trying this one. It’s for the ladies, and at my gym most shy away from it because they are copying men and don’t see men on it. It has done miracles for my problem area, where the butt and thigh meet. It works!
Another great thing about San Diego is our friends. They meet up for exercise more than for happy hour. One friend went out swimming over the weekend, saw a half marathon, and just decided to do it. We’ve done hiking and MK’s all active gearing up for snorkeling and scuba.

Good luck through the holidays to everyone trying to stay fit!

Big Fat Liar

I’ll admit it, I kept my MTC post within the boundaries of propriety. The truth is that my favorite holiday tradition is indeed a little thing called “The 12 Bars of Christmas.”

What’s that? A pub crawl. In the olden days some genius invented a drink per bar at many bars in a group. Now most cities host some event like this. Christmas is the best time since there’s that little jingle you can customize with your drink and bar of choice. In Austin, PR brought a group out to a well organized crawl, with costumes and Santas and tons of people. He even took pictures at each place, as evidence of the 12 drinks. And what you look like before, during, and after them. We experienced its joy many times. My favorite was the ‘festive name tag’, where you’d perhaps go by “Evan the Elf” or “Caroling Caroline” or “Hanukkah Hank”.

Click here for a sample, I think we were at this one.
Some day, I want to see the all Santa suits one: click here for that.

People have fallen in love, fallen in the street, and fallen for great shots annually. So it was music to my ears to hear about and get an invitation to the Pacific Beach Pub Crawl. It ends up being the same day as MK’s Christmas party, so he might need a new date.

In the spirit of giving this season, I invite all you Jager fans to be inspired by this site I found:

Traditions Are Our History

What are your favorite holiday traditions and why?

This question is best answered in the form of me telling my non existent children some day in the future about my growing up:

Okay, kids, let me tell you a story. You’re going to have to use your imaginations. Once upon a time, before the ipod and Tivo and DVR, my dad- your grandpa, used to make us movies. There were these things called VCRs. You could put a cassette tape in it and record tv onto the tape. You would press record and then pause to get out the commercials. Yes, you had to watch it. No, it wasn’t programmable. Use your imagination, I said.
So one year, your grandpa watched every Christmas special there was, and made us a video that had The Grinch, Rudolph, Frosty, Santa Claus is Coming, Charlie Brown, that Claymation movie, and some sing along with the California Raisins, you won’t know that one, anyway. I’m sure there was cursing and breaking of things but I won’t get in to that. It was a hard job. Some parts were messy. At the end there might have been half of Scrooge that got taped over by some guy playing the guitar singing Blue Christmas. Don’t tell grandpa I couldn’t remember the name of that guy, he’ll shoot me.
Your grandpa would put it in and we would all sit as a family and watch the movies. Sometimes even when I wasn’t supposed to I put it in after school. Why weren’t we supposed to? Well, VCRs were very delicate and little girls didn’t know how to make them work, only how to make them not work. No, this was before the internet. You’re not paying attention. What? I’m not that old! We played it Christmas Eve and Christmas when we opened gifts.
After a very long time, the tape wore out, and we grew up, but we would still watch it and laugh and the parts that were slow and broken because we rewound and fast forwarded so much. It was my favorite thing to do every holiday until we bought The Muppet’s Christmas Carol. Yes, that was on tape too. Go download it. Whatever.

Recuperating

palm treeSeriously. What a break. Key West was a blast. We soaked up the rays, and attended a lovely wedding. Our trip to West Palm Beach was just as lovely. Talk about two completely different worlds. We flew overnight, which made it feel like going to a foreign country, and screwed up our sleep schedules for the week. We got in to Ft. Lauderdale and drove through all the keys. There are a lot of keys. Many of the keys look like the other keys…

We got in just in time for some drinks in the pool and the spectacular sunset, then it was off to the rehearsal dinner. It was about 30 people, the intimate kind of wedding we had briefly considered. It was so happy and fun. We went out exploring after dinner and found that there are some very eclectic places there…

The next day MK and I went to the beach, shopped, walked, and toasted our vacation a couple times. The afternoon was perfect for a wedding. The ceremony and dinner was great, and PW managed to get everyone out to Hog’s Breath, where we were met by the Christmas bagpipes. And many other places. You’ll enjoy those pictures once I find them.

We headed up to West Palm on no sleep and laid low that night, then took KK out to breakfast and lunch to visit. Our flight home was on a giant plane so we both slept well.

Not thinking about anything for a few days put me in a great frame of mind. I feel ready to revise, reread, and recreate a great book. Two great books. (That’s right, I have two now.) I feel ready for the holidays. I feel ready to get in touch, get back to life.
