Aftermath

Some of last night, I had predicted: a full house, people in costume, a funny little intro. Smiles and anticipation.

And then…well, you had to be 30+ for some of it. They were just music videos. And you just watched. Or sang, if you knew the words. I hadn’t known maybe the first 5 songs until they got into the typical stuff, the Journey and “Sweet Child of Mine”. It was a little less thrilling than I expected. I also thought it was just power ballads, but it was all crappy love jams. Which was fun sometimes, like “Eternal Flame”. Come on, that’s classic.

I think either not everyone was drunk enough, or maybe, they also were hoping it was a little more interactive. I’d say 50% loved it, 50% would skip it next time around.

The videos were hilarious, and, just for you, here’s a picture of us brandishing our lighters during the encore, which was, of course, “November Rain”.

Total Eclipse Of The…

Alamo Drafthouse has been one of the best things in Austin to me, always. I have been to movies, Spike and Mike’s Sick and Twisted Animation, and Mr. Sinus Theatre. I have seen that thing where they get everyone drunk and have them make a movie. I have been to events that sell out weeks in advance.

But nothing, nothing has me prepared for this evening. Having friends that are (deal with it) older than me, and that remember EVERY song of the 80s, I can see why we are all going to the 80s power ballads sing along downtown tonight. I’m not sure anyone even plans to get up and actually do any singing, which is kind of part of the fun. I also mentioned that I’d be willing to go in costume, as I figured this would be de rigueur, only to be laughed at.

I’m not sure about all this. I’ve heard that sometimes the karaoke works, sometimes it doesn’t. We’ll see. Considering I’m not planning to participate – I don’t think I know any of the songs by heart, only bits and pieces, I will content myself with the photographing – is that allowed? – and note taking to provide you all with a detailed commentary.

Missing: Social Skills

Running in to people that you knew from a former life is depressing. Makes you realize what you lose.

So, I knew a lot of people when I had a job. Now that I don’t even leave the house unless we’re out of milk, of course I see someone I know at the grocery store.

Old me: Hey, good to see you, how’s the world treating you? Good, good. You know, I’m swamped, yeah. (more pleasant friendly small talk). Sure, let’s do lunch next week! Take Care!

What I just did: Um, oh! Hey! Um, been a while, yeah. So… (awkward pause) I saw this person that you know a while ago. Oh, I thought you knew them, never mind. Lunch? Well, it’s not like I have anything better to do.

chimp

That last sentence right there was the killer. Oh, and I said it word for word. Sealed the deal of me realizing that I have LOST the ability to be nice to acquaintances now that I barely see more than two people on a regular basis. Who says that? Color me embarrassed.

Almost Famous

So if you saw the Sunday paper, there was an article about the local meetings that the NaNoer’s in Austin have been having. If you even followed that story to J3, you saw the back of my head. I forgot to mention this episode because I forgot the article had even come out, until someone told me. Funniest thing is, it’s some blond hair, which I no longer have. So say I’m at a public event, NO ONE WILL EVEN be like, “Hey isn’t that the beautiful back – of – a – girls – head that you were studying all day Sunday into the evening?” I won’t even be noticed, never mind asked for an autograph. So ALAS, Austin American-Statesmen, you have failed me. And your audience, who would have loved to see more of me.

*Cues someone singing “You look better from behind” * (Mom, that’s a rap song.)

So I’m a little sad about that.

And, I got almost half way to where I wanted to be with my book before I left, so I have to be happy about that. My computer couldn’t keep up with me last night, I thought it might over heat and explode, so I let it be and turned it off a little earlier than I had planned.

I will talk to you in four days!! Until then…peruse all three months of archives to make me feel good about myself. 😉

Blame It On Football*

Once again, the day was spent not writing. We went to a “Hollyweird” Anniversary Party last night at a production studio, but I was still up at 8 am. Whoo me, right? Well, we decided to go get groceries and breakfast tacos (Rudy’s Rules!!!) and clean the house and watch three hours of football.

UT is on at 7 tonight and a few people might come over, so there’s even more time for me to procrastinate. I got all the way past 18,000 words last night (the condition to be able to go out) but I’m still so far behind.

I might be happy when this month is over.

*This was posted yesterday, but didn’t show up right…so I’m still unofficially posting every day like the rest of them. Really. I’m blaming it on UT.

Too Much Fun

Book writing is supposed to be boring!! And hard work. I always picture people pulling at their hair and pouring over research texts (before the internet), not eating, drinking heavily – in misery, not the kind I condone.

But listen to this y’all – I’m having fun. In between the blogging and computer drama (strangely not a problem when I’m NOT AT HOME…) this is a blast! I’m making friends and finding new coffee shops and listening to story plots that I could have never imagined. We have a team mascot (the penguin) and that’s out team name too. There are competitions and heated discussions about whether or not a duck could be rabid or what solvent can disguise death by lead paint. There are children that have more than 13,000 words already.

I’m so lucky to be in a city like Austin, it’s like having you’re own cheerleading section.

Fluffy Guy

Took the parents to Cap. City Comedy Club to see Gabriel Iglesias last night. You might have seen him on Comedy Central or Last Comic Standing. Thursday night shows (I had no idea) are longer than Friday/Saturday because there’s only one show. There were two opening acts, Martin Moreno and Noe Gonzalez. Gabriel was up there TWO HOURS. He was really funny. I liked that he knew a lot about Austin and had been here enough to talk about local things. He also involved the crowd and made a lot of jokes on the spot. Dad was cracking up and Mom got caught laughing at even some of the crude jokes :). If you’ve got time this weekend, worth checking out!

We’ll be in San Antonio for the weekend, we get to stay at the Contessa and eat at Biga on the Banks, my family gets to meet my best friend AS’s parents, which I’m really looking forward to. Have a good weekend!

43 Things

I’ve been looking over this site tonight that’s called 43 Things (dotcom). Austin is one of the biggest participating cities, but the site is a little odd. There’s also a 43places.com…

Let me know if you can figure it out. I’ve never heard of this before – probably just another social networking site, but nonetheless, a neat one.
