All Caught Up

Thursday we did more shopping, found the Best Buy and the Target, things MK can’t live without, and then last night we went to our first Mariners game, which was fantastic fun. I really hope my parents come down in August and watch the Red Sox with me. It’s a great stadium, and there’s a bus right outside that took us there.

Today is actually the 100th Anniversary celebration for Pike’s Market, so we’re headed out to see what that is all about. We’ll venture out to a bar for the first time tonight, and tomorrow try out brunch. Can’t wait!

On The Road Again

Sunday morning started at 5 again, much to my wanting to beat my husband unhappiness. The part I was awake for watched and saw everything of was Wyoming. It was beautiful.

view.jpg view2.jpg

MK drove most of the way. I took over in Utah and got us to Boise, Idaho. I will never be able to tell you how he heard that Boise was cool…but it wasn’t. There was a cute little downtown and whatever but it was a college town. In Utah, I learned that when your car dies, that’s where it goes. We saw tons and tons of abandoned motor vehicles. Not on the road, just around. In huge piles. It was just the little corner, but it wasn’t very pretty. I wonder who owns that land…since it was Sunday, the stores in Utah were closed, even the Subway we tried to eat at. WTF? I wouldn’t want to be moving there…hahaha just kidding, Mrs. Standin.

Anyway, so we’re in Boise, at the hotel, and they were nice enough, and told us to go eat at some brew pub. At least the Red Sox were on. The service was brain dead. It was late. So, we went back to the room for sleepy time. We were really exhilarated though, knowing that we were about to embark on the last leg of our journey. BUT, we put on the alarm on my phone and turned it up. That was dumb, since with the time change, people might accidentally call and wake you up!

We got back to bed okay, and up a little later that usual (6am) to get ourselves to our new home. We drove through Oregon, where there were great big trees – which I missed in Texas, and it was beautiful. Crossing the Washington border got me really excited. This is our new home state! Since the last time we where in Seattle, we flew, we had no idea what the rest of the state looked like. I felt like I was exploring my new territory. MK drove but I was awake and excited. Even though we were still 5 hours away. We drove by the place that the music festival we’ll be attending next month is at, that was fun, to know we’d be back. There was water and snow and great views everywhere. There are tons and tons of vineyards in the Yakima Valley, where we drove up through, and that got me excited. I’ve never had any WA wine, but I will!

Post Poker Championship

Friday night went out with a bang, us heading back the B’s pad and makin’ some fancy drinks. Not sure if I mentioned these two important facts, but SB makes better martinis than any bartender out there, and Enviga is really good with vodka. She had some pomegranate and Izze and Enviga concoction that I think she should trademark. Seriously, we had it out. MK retired for a bit and SB and I had a classic girls reminiscing over drinks time that will have a special little place in my heart forever. Background: We worked together for a very short time before we got a place together, that was forever ago and we’re still each other’s favorites. That rocks.

Saturday was a slow to get going day, MK and I went out for water, Gatorade and Quiznos, aka hangover cure lunch. RB has a sweet giant plane and we tried to go fly it but it was too windy. We found a place called Croc’s that had the infamous Bloody Mary Bar, a couple times. Delicious. A1, my favorite product in the universe, makes those drinks, let me tell you. We went home and snoozed a little while RB worked on his music, he’s a world famous musician. He’s got new tunes coming out soon. So cool.

SB took MK and I to the Rockies game that night. For dinner. Reminder: As a BoSox girl, I didn’t know there were places you could go to and get $4-$15 tickets. That day. For that game. The place was so empty. I guess they aren’t that good…didn’t matter to me. We got brats with all the fixin’s, peanuts and beer. Coors. It is the Coors stadium. You get Coors beer. That’s it. Fine. You can’t see the mountains, but I could. Very pretty.

brat.jpg stadium.jpg

SB took us to the coolest bar in the world, Double Daughters.

ddtrs.jpg ddtrs2.jpg

We hung out there, checked out the Meadowlark, which was packed, then headed home. Early morning, y’all.

Denver was interesting. It is polluted, and messy, highly under construction downtown. The B’s talked to us a lot about living there, especially coming from NYC, they were disappointed in the lack of vibes and culture Denver had going for it. To be sure, I felt what they were talking about. I also understood what they meant when they said if they mentioned their feelings at all, other Denver-dwellers became irate, indignant, and offended. Hmpf. Not a place I’ll ever be living in, but I’m glad we got to pass through and see it for ourselves.

I’m Back

Well, somegosoftly fans, we first have to give thestandin a big round of applause for keeping you (and me) entertained. I was so happy to be blog free for a while, even though I had a little internet-withdrawal-syndrome. I have to do this in date/time order, or I will get all confused, even though today was the best! day! yet! and I can’t wait to tell you about it. My little fingers are flying to get us all caught up and on the same page. Of course the pictures will be late, I have no idea where the cord is.

We left Austin at about 6am on Thursday. We went to bed around midnight. I had cleaned the whole place so well we had no where to sleep. I thought I could throw the air mattress on the wood floor of our living room, but somewhere between MK’s toss and turn 3 and 7 I realized I’d be up all night from the squeaking unless that went back in the bedroom, despite the marks it’d make on my carpet, after vacuuming in these little perfect sweeps so they could see how clean it was. We actually woke up at about 5, and had this adventure time of not being awake and not being able to get everything in the car. It’s too embarrassing, so there are no pictures, but we seriously put that car full like a secret Mensa puzzle. You couldn’t do it. It was crazy. We have so. much. crap.

MK drove to Wichita Falls, Texas. I didn’t know there was one of those. In fact, I didn’t know that every town has similar street names, and every state has similar county names. Let me preface this segment with a little background: I’ve lived in CT most of my natural life. This included numerous trips through MA, RI, VT, NH and ME. But it’s not like I paid any attention. I was little. Then I lived in TX, Austin to be specific. All you travel from there is Houston and Dallas. So this drive…this going through parts of Texas I’ve never been awake for… well it made me realize things. Like why people look at me LIKE THAT when I tell them that I’m from Texas. Ugh. I drove nine hours straight. Amarillo, everything before it and after it – well I’m fairly sure that’s the armpit of civilization as we know it. It was frightening. To stop for gas. To eat. To LOOK AROUND. Freaking gross, nothing to look at, forsaken place. And I almost forgot to mention that after the TX/OK border, I hit the NM border in style…thinking it would be beautiful…and it was under construction. The speed limit was 35. For an hour. Then 45. For an hour. Ugh.

As you will recall, the first part of our trip included a very special stop in Denver, CO, home to some very special people. MK finished the drive to Denver, and we got in at about midnight. Since we were staying at the SB all inclusive resort, I immediately requested a back rub and a beer. I got the beer. Then we passed out – sleepy time. Then it was FRIDAY…That morning – busted, around noon – we went to the VIP eatery those of you that were in ‘yoga’ with me may know that the Real World Denver went to called Snooze. It was dee-lish-ious. Wow.

snuz.jpg

SB took us to her work, right down the street. Ladies and gentlemen, my favorite roommate ever- probably including MK- works at a THINK TANK. You’ve seen them. She has a bball court and a ping pong table and limitless other recreational activities located throughout the office to ‘inspire creative thought’. My creative thought is jealousy. I want to work there. But not live in Denver. More on that later. We went to the Denver Aquarium.

outaqu.jpg

As an ode to my father, Semi-Professional African Cichlid Breeder, I was reflecting on the fact I think I’ve been to every aquarium in every city that I’ve ever visited that had one. Paris (France, not Texas) is the only place I couldn’t recall trying to find the local aquarium in. Anyway…it was a nice little aquarium and it also surprised me, since I’ve been to so many aquariums, as it had

TIGERS.

liger.jpg

I know. That’s crazy, right? They were chillin’ around the rainforest exhibit. That’s all I can say about that. I’m thinking “Are you sure these guys are supposed to be here?”

This is us and a 250lb. grouper:

grouper.jpg

Ooooh, and I almost forgot to tell you that we fed stingrays:

stingray.jpg
All that exploring made us thirsty, so we hit up some bars. We went to a place called Sputnik for nothing other than the promise of an old time photo booth, which turned out to be out of order. 😦 Luckily, we found so much more. MK had a fascinating Vanilla infused homemade vodka shot, SB went with a pomegranate martini the likes of which I’d never seen. (I had a beer.) Yum.

sputnik.jpg

We rolled over to The Hornet next, to see what we could see about the rumor they had a all day weekend Bloody Mary Bar the like of which I’ve mentioned here. We had yummy drinks here too, and some lobster asparagus and something else I forget what pizza. (SB?)

The events that transpire next are rewarded with their own post.

Cowabunga, Dude

80sparty1.jpg

That should say it all. That is none other than Teen Wolf, flanked by snippy and yours truly, somegosoftly.

You may recall that for her birthday, we did the 80s power ballad sing alongs. I talked about it here and again here. Well, I wasn’t that good then, but last night, I shined. Like a giant shiny day glo disco ball. Last night we attended Rock the Casbah with DJ Mel at the Parish. Now we’re talking 80s pop and dance music. all. night. long. Madonna, Prince, Wham, Duran Duran, Yes. I knew almost all of it. It was clear to any bystander that I did, as well as my crew, as we shouted and sang and danced.

80sparty.jpg

These are some 5 star costumes. Teen Wolf was only one of the entourage of 20+ the best friend brought out last night. It was a trip, there was so much to see and point at and danced to. From “Our House” to “Our Lips Are Sealed”, I’ve never crooned and swayed and jived more passionately. The only thing(s) that could have made this night a better way to spend our last Saturday night in Austin are if JC my super rockin’ dance partner had been there and I was able to give out awards, including but not limited to the following categories:

  • Best Use of a Scrunchie
  • Best Sunglasses Worn at Night
  • Most Unique Interpretation of an 80s Dance Move
  • Cutest Boy in a Members Only Jacket
  • Best Stonewash of Jean
  • Highest Side Ponytail

MK pulled out a little dance move for Depeche Mode that completed my night and vaulted it in my memory as the greatest dance party of all time.

Party all the time, party all the time…

Tell me, what is your most hoppin’-ist 80s dance song?

Home Sweet Home

We got our place, for certain. It all worked out great. It’s so exciting to be getting all this taken care of, to make progress, as slow as it has been, and get ready to go. I’ve been making more lists than I imagined, Austin things to do before I go, people to see, what clothes to pack, where we’ve put things, addresses to change…I’m sure I’m forgetting so much, we haven’t moved in three years.

This is the place:

tower.jpg

This is the view, there’s a rooftop lounge-y area, of course it’s cloudy, but you can make out the Space Needle, and mountains behind that when it’s clear:

imagestoredll.jpg

Here’s our place, small, but fully furnished and everything:

We leave in two weeks, and will spend a weekend in Denver on our way up to spend time with my old college roommate, SB. I can’t wait!

SXSW Night (And Day!) Seven

Bloody Mary. Those two words were music to my ears – cliche appropriate due to the ringing also in my ears by now – Saturday at 12 at La Feria with KD. Anxious to head back downtown, we met everyone out at Red7. Again, with some amazing luck, we made it in the door right before the 2 hour line planted itself there for the rest of the afternoon. Words I also loved hearing, in response to “Who are we here to see?”: “It’s the David Cross showcase.” Perfect.

We saw the bands Deerhunter, The Ponys, The Black Lips, and The Walkmen. We got to see David Cross perform, as well as Brain Posehn and (I think, but may have to edit this list later) Bob Odenkirk, Zack Galifianakis, and the girl that does the news on SNL that isn’t Tina Fey.

Here’s David Cross. I saw him listening and performing, my friends E and P took a pic with him (I’m so jealous!):

dc.jpg dcp.jpg david-cross-and-friends.jpg

I really like the music that Deerhunter played, but I felt awful that I could not take my eyes off the lead singer. “The skinniest man on the face of the Earth,” claim the MySpacers. “He suffers from Marfan syndrome, try not to insult him,” others retort. The 1 in 5,000 Americans affected are typically tall, thin, and at risk of heart problems. Source(s): MySpace, March of Dimes, pitchforkmedia.com.

deer.jpg

The Ponys were decent, The Black Lips better, and The Walkmen, whom I’ve seen before, couldn’t really project fully enough the perfect way the vocals and the vintage instruments compliment each other. Outside seemed to be tough, and with 800 bands and all that equipment, I’m sure the sound guys were toast.

walkmemn.jpg

I did get to have my photo taken with Brian Posehn:

bpnme.jpg

All that work drinking and rocking made us hungry. We went for sushi

sushi.jpg And got a ‘boatload’:sushi2.jpg

Here’s one more Frost Bank Tower pic:

fronst2.jpg

From there we were headed to a party that ended up being canceled, so we re-routed our group to Firehouse, to see DJ Chicken George.

fire.jpg fun.jpg

djcg.jpgfun3.jpg

It wasn’t like we forgot about St. Patrick’s Day either, there was plenty of that everywhere.

fun2.jpg

That about wrapped it up. We made it out each day, and now it is time to relax. We’ll all be going through party and drink withdrawals, and missing live music. I think it is safe to say that SXSW has been one of the best things I’ve finally been able to experience. It opened my eyes to so much new music to listen to, so much to think about, and so many new friends that I’m still in overload. I didn’t leave the house today, and it’s going to be tough to get back on schedule.

It’s cute that we all make jokes about the mad influx of hipsters, but our city has to embrace this week, this party we throw. It’s that good.

SXSW Night (And Day!) Six

Friday started out bright and early at around 2, meeting up with the crew at the Little Radio party at the Red Eyed Fly. It wasn’t all that happening, but I did pick up a koozie and a free CD from them. We wandered from there when the music started to make us doze off a bit. We got in to Emo’s at the most perfect time, hardly having to wait in the line that was forming. You know the day is going to be good when you start with Sparks for breakfast:

sparks.jpg

The bands we saw were absolutely great. Menomena, Girl Talk, and Peter, Bjorn, and John, the band I’d been hearing all the buzz about.

I really liked the sound of Menomena (Men-oh-mean-ah, not mahnamahna, like I kept saying). Girl Talk I had never heard of, but whenever a guy gets on a stage with just a computer I’m always wondering what he’s really doing up there. It also seems odd to me that all those super scene-y people listen to all the pop music, I pictured them turning up their noses in disgust, but the were all dancing fools. Peter, Bjorn, and John didn’t really do it for me, but I’ll still be checking out the CD, realizing I’ll probably enjoy it at home with some wine instead of at an outdoor stage with a woman talking behind me the whole time and knocking me in the head with her camera. I also will call them PB and J. That makes me laugh.

*IMPORTANT PART OF THIS STORY THAT EVERYONE SHOULD READ:*

I got introduced to some new friends and we were all just standing in the street when what to my wondrous eyes should appear than PEREZ HILTON, with bright pink dyed hair:

perez.jpg

Does it look like I chased him down and forced a photo? Well, that’s because I did. He’s the most famous blogger I can think of, and he now graces the pages here at somegosoftly.

*END IMPORTANT PART OF THIS STORY.*

People are always taking pictures with the Frost Bank Tower in them, I figured I’d get you all one:

frost.jpg

JC and I then checked out a band here at the outside Pure Volume stage, then met KD, and had some Brick Oven for dinner and saw some of the UT game on our way to the Diesel party. There we saw another great line up: David Vandervelde, The Epochs, Illinois, Matt & Kim, Tokyo Police Club, and Girl Talk again. I would recommend all of that music. The party was great and the (free!) drinks were nice. It might have been a little too much for some people, it got a little dirty in there:

hall.jpg

You may be thinking to yourself, that place doesn’t look very full or fun. It got crazy packed and turned into a giant party, but I took this pic while Girl Talk was on, so everyone was dancing.

Let me show you before he started:

before.jpg

And then after:

after.jpg

That’s right, people rushed the stage. Girls were in prom dresses. Everyone shook their moneymakers. Good times were had. Shirts were removed. From men and women. (No pics of that, sorry!)

We managed to make it outside after all that craziness and viewed the phenomenon of the free ice cream truck. It certainly became the hit of the week. It’s sad to realize there’s only one more day of this to go…

Unknown's avatar

SXSW Night Five

You can’t handle this. What a week it’s been already. Last night started out perfect. I made it in time to KD’s to see the end of the big Duke upset. We rounded up the crew, bigger and better with friends in town for the shows, and headed out to this party. On the way, we managed to go in two wrong entrances, the first of which scored is free stuff, no complaints. Finally we found the right gate.

How do we miss this:

gate.jpg

if this is right next to it?

bigguy.jpg

There was also a MOON BOUNCE, in case you missed that on the flyer. I didn’t get a good picture, but if you don’t know what they look like you had a horrible childhood.

There were astronauts.

img_2937.jpg

Dancing astronauts.

dance.jpg

There was free wine. Chairs. Fun music. We heard Kanye West’s DJ friend. We ran into what I’m guessing made our group total 20 people. I shut my phone off. That may be the smartest thing I’ve done yet. This is us smiling, phone free:

cute.jpg lnco.jpg uconn.jpg

(we were doin’ ‘uconn’ in that last one, my other CT friend and I)

This is a picture to make snippy mad about having her drinking issues keeping her from meeting us out, she might like monkeys a little bit, and there were some:

monkeys.jpg

After all the wine and music we could take in one place, JC, KD and I headed out to the Pure Volume party. There were more (free!) drinks, enough to get us all dancing, shouting and screaming.

kdjc.jpg

And I’m really having a good time meeting strangers and taking pictures. Look how excited they were to meet us:

strangeres.jpg

The Pure Volume party was an after hours party. They kept the liquor flowing until KD realized she had to be up in a few hours and we made our way back to the car. We may never know what happened at 3:15 that night, but something must have broken, they let us out of the hotel garage without paying. That’s right it was (free!) parking. To go with our (free!) drinks. How can you beat that?

The music report lacks a little substance, but we saw the bands on the flyer, some DJs, nothing that stood out to me. Maybe we’ll work on that tomorrow…

SXSW Night Four

This is where the going gets tricky my friends. With the music portion of – I forgot to tell you we refer to this as ‘Southby’ – in full force, we are doing things like, ugh, waiting in lines. It was a whole new scene last night.

sxsw3.jpg

We started the night at our first ‘your name has to be on the list’ party, at a big warehouse, put on by Fader and Stereogum. We were on the list. Woo. We got to see this really great band called Lo Fi Fnk, which was three very, very young boys which I am relatively sure were from Sweden, maybe? They had all kinds of fun musical electronic equipment. As a direct contrast, right afterwards the Meat Puppets performed. I didn’t know I knew them, but recognized some songs. It was decent. They did have more (free!) drinks, but that didn’t tempt me. It was early. Aren’t these young guys cute?

babyband.jpg

When they shut a party down, it closes in 30 seconds, so they ran everyone out. Perhaps in the time it took us to get to our car, and make our foray over to east Austin to make a run at the iheartcomix party, everyone else must’ve flown. It was a little bit crowded. As in, we could stand in line with no promise of getting in, or we could find another party. What would you do? So we found another party. I can’t tell you how I got in, where we were, or whether or not we were technically supposed to be…but maybe this looks familiar.

red.jpg

White tent, red lights, could it be…*gasp*

gasp.jpg

Right. So, that was the band Illinois. Here’s a better picture, that guy was pretty cute:
illinois.jpg

Rounding out the night we heard The Annuals, which I’m not sure if their ability to play 800 instruments makes up for their odd comments and dull tunes, but they’re pretty popular so what do I know. Also there was Holy F**k, which was more of a DJ set even though it was all instruments, pretty cool.

Well, that about wraps it up, and I have to admit, although I’m only posting about Southby this week all in order, no interruptions, I’m working on much much more, and – I can’t lie…

watching basketball.
