So Over America

Folks, Canada is where it is AT. I don’t even know how to tell you that I want to apply for citizenship, get my maiden name back, and assimilate immediately. Really.

Our trip to Vancouver was AWESOME. The drive was beautiful, if not super interesting. I-5 takes you up from Mt. Rainier to Mt. Baker, and the views were clear and great. The border, which you can see in the pictures is guarded by a stone pillar and a flower flag, only took two hours to get through. As soon as we made it to Vancouver, we took in the view of the city and drove right past it to the Capilano Suspension Bridge Park. Since 1889 it’s been full of bratty kids trying to sway you into a stranger all stumbly-like. It’s extreme, you can also see evidence of that in the pictures…

We did the tree top adventure, then realized the exchange rate was one-to-one and that meant a 15$ salad was really 15$. It was going to be a long trip. Despite my worthless American currency, I love Canada. Tourists abound. Everyone sounds like you but really does say aboot. So hot. The weather was perfect. I think the sun has a little smiley face on it up there. After the excitement at Capilano, you run right into Grouse Mountain, another fantastic tourist trap. We headed right to the top and ate our 3pm lunch in 10 minutes flat. Canada adventure made me hungry. There were bears, as you see that at first looked friendly, but put on a mud wrestling show for us. There was a loggers show, and a gondola that we look so cute on. For only 199$ you too could experience the thrill of a 15 minute paragliding trip, which we passed on. Super fun-ed out, we went to the city to check in to the hotel and check out the night life.

MK got the coolest hotel in the world, the Pan Pacific in Canada Place, where the WTC and Cruise ships and all kinds of other random things hang out. There’s a pic of our view from the room right out on to all the water. We got prettied up, had some coffee, and made our way out to Robson Street. Holy cooler than Seattle, Batman. There was more shopping than anywhere. There was tons of expensive cars and interesting people and food and lights and parties. You say this is the most livable city? I can see it…

I got some new shoes, which put that song into my head about new shoes on (that’s the only part I know) so I was a hummy happy lady. We checked out all the downtown until it closed and found Yaletown, the hippest part of the place. We ate dinner at a super cool oyster bar, where they taught me all about beer and oysters and vintage soul music. Too much fun. We popped into a couple bars and couldn’t get over how happy everyone was and the great vibe just running around everywhere. It’s the best episode of the Twilight Zone, no bad ending. Then we got so sleepy!

For breakfast we went and checked out where I will be living someday, Beach Drive. We ate omelettes in the sunshine and drove from beach to beach to beach. Every one had an amazing view. Right before lunch we made it to Granville, where the public market is even bigger and prettier than Pikes. After a lunch stop and more exploring we made it over to Stanley Park, the Spanish mossy beach, and in and out of countless parts of the city, the Chinatown, campus, and south and west of the city.

If I had only known, I would have picked Vancouver over Seattle. I would have my dual citizenship documents expedited. I can only agree with everyone else that thinks this is the best place to live, it was like nothing else I’d ever seen in any other of my travels. Maybe if the exchange rate improves, eh?

Independence Day Revelry

The 4th of July here was undoubtedly the best weather we’ve seen in Seattle to date. It was pretty, clear, and the warmest day yet, high 80s. The night before we’d purchased a full days worth of roof food. We went for a walk in the morning. Around noon we headed up to grill our turkey burgers, expecting a full roof of people intent on remaining in the sun until 10pm. There were maybe 5 people. We brought up chairs with which to steal the best spot, and cooked and ate. I got some great sun hours. We visited with friends and shared beers and stories. Good times.

Running up and down for refills and breaks from the heat got harder and harder as the day went on, and numerous people I’ve never seen, don’t think actually lived here, and can’t determine where they all could have parked started to show up. In addition, South Lake Union got busier and busier too, filling up with boats. We could also just barely make out the people filling up Gas Works Park across the water, which you can see getting packed in the photos across the water.

Burnt and burnt out, MK and I took a breather around 6 and checked out some tv and some snooze time. Revived and hungry again, we managed just barely to find room on the grill for some chicken and eat on our laps. Somebody paid a DJ to show up, and fill the air with house music, which would have been fun if he were not terrible. It was novel, at least.

And then, the fireworks. You can also see in the photos the Space Needle. On the left is Puget Sound, where the first set of fireworks began. Then a helicopter circled Lake Union with a giant American Flag, and the main fireworks display there began.

Here are the pictures.

Mount Rainier

There are a few things that I know about Mt Rainier: that it is high, near me, and pretty. So when we got up at 6 am last Monday, put five random layers in the car, some Cliff bars, and water, I didn’t know what to expect.

It takes a little over two hours to get out there. These two hours are hilarious, especially pre-4th, as you are driving through a giant trailer park Indian Reservation that is selling more fireworks than Washington DC sets off. Those little stands are everywhere. Here’s a group of them:

Then you’re in the national park, and if you’re super cool, the first thing you see is this guy:

elk.jpg

That’s right, within minutes. Animals. Wild life. Sweeet. The best part about Mt Rainier, as far as I could tell, is there sure is a lot of it that you can drive up. We were representing the east side. The base camp of our hike, Sunrise, was about 6000 elevation. That’s getting close to halfway already. We hiked backwards from everyone else to be super cool, and made good time as far as I was concerned, never having hiked a mountain before. Sure, the cripple and elderly were lapping us on the trails, but you just do your personal best, that’s what it’s all about.

Can you see that line in the middle of this picture here? That’s where we walked.

*dusts dirt of shoulders*

Seriously though, we also got to see a marmot, and a ton of chipmunks. And an unidentified bird.

chip.jpg marmot.jpg

The whole animals thing thrilled me, what did not was the steep sided cliffs with narrow snowy passages. Death March. But I made it here to type about it. It was actually hilarious the adrenaline I felt accomplishing relatively little, but we did get as high as you can without a Sherpa…

Lakes Washington And Union; Hooters And Horns

We rented a boat yesterday to check out some of the fair waterways we now find ourselves surrounded by. Not sure what the real temperature ever is around here, I had shorts, tanks, sweats, and a rain coat, just in case. Luckily, it was fairly warm. The views of Mt. Rainier and Seattle from Lake Washington are spectacular. We gawked at most of the houses, this one had a ROCK CLIMBING wall, can you believe that?

wall.jpg

The only thing stranger than any body of water I’ve ever been on is the constant landing and taking off of seaplanes. You never can tell where they’re headed until they’re NEAR you. Yikes.

After a power workout we headed back out to South Lake Union. On Tuesdays they have sailing races that you can watch. It was amazing to see how many sail boats were out there.

sail.jpg

After watching for a while, we headed out to Lock Spot Cafe to see if any one famous from the Deadliest Catch was going to show up for the finale…and passed by a Hooters. With Longhorn signs all over. Upon further inquiry, we learned it’s Texas Exes central during football season. More importantly, they kick off the season by SHIPPING UP BBQ and throwing a big party.
Only 72 days, 23 hours, 43 minutes to go…

Photo Limits = Grouchy Blogger

Talk about frustrating. I was all about this flickr thing, and had organized all my pictures and started to upload them. So now, I’m trying snapfish.

sfish.jpg
I should be going backwards to add to the appropriate posts, but then I bet that you wouldn’t even look at them:

Flickr – Seattle Memorial Day Weekend – that’s the pics that are cute but are not Sasquatch from when everyone was here. I’ve added some more recently.

Snapfish – Sasquatch – I bet you can figure out what those are. There’s no place for explanations, but they’re either of us, the music, or the view…

Snapfish – Fremont Fair – this is for the post I never wrote. It would have gone a little like this:

Maybe 78704 is Austin style hippie, but Fremont is pretty far out there too. The parade is to celebrate the ‘Soulstice’, so there’s a parade of nekkid bicyclers, and then a huge parade of more stuff that makes even less sense. If it looks a little strange, that’s because nothing could be motorized or not recyclable. Earth friendly parade. It was certainly the most crowded event that I’ve been to in Seattle, and very interesting. You can see the one picture of a crowded street, and there was also a car show of strange cars. The clouds towards the end of the afternoon looked like rain so I headed home instead of to the end celebration at Gas Works Park, but I had seen plenty.

Hope you enjoy!!

Trying Flickr

So there, what I went and did was put all the Maritime Festival Pictures from this weekend up in my Flickr account. I don’t use it very often since there’s limited sizes and code, but for sharing purposes, this might work best. I’m hoping that you can just open the link and see everything. I put up a dozen or so. We take too many…

Tons of blogs have little photo slide shows on the side of the page, I’m not going to attempt all that. It’s easier for all of us that way. Updated: As you will see if you’ve been around, Flickr sucks and I’m using Snapfish these days.

You can view it as a slide show or click the detail button for the little blurbs I added for you. Let me know what you think.

Another Weekend

One more weekend done. It’s been such a blast but it also feels like the time is passing so quickly! After lunch Friday we headed out to Broadway, where I happily found a dozen or so great boutiques and bought 4 shirts and a dress. One was a 99$ BCBG shirt on sale for 30$. I know where I’m getting my stuff from now on! Super fashionable, trendy, and affordable. I love my new looks, it’s fun to change it up every once in a while…

We went to Fremont to a bar called Nectar and saw a great salsa/reggaeton band that a friend invited us out to. For whatever reason, though, we still can’t get used to staying out late and were out of there by 12. The next morning, bright and early, we were back by the water for more chowder and excitement. There was a cruise ship docked, this weekend starts the season and it was definitely a sight. People where everywhere on the piers, luggage and cell phones, eating, drinking. I’ve never been on one but it looked interesting. If you’ve never seen one of those boats, I don’t think you can conceptualize the size of those things. It was crazy. We started out touring the harbor in a free tour, happy to get out on the water, and happy to learn that is not something worth paying for when company comes. The we toured the maritime museum, which was actually a lot of fun, very kid oriented. There was a tug boat ‘parade’ and contest where we voted for our favorite. It was one big party after another on the water. The Coast Guard followed with an amazing presentation of a helicopter water rescue. After that, we got back on chowder duty. We must have tried at least ten and started getting pretty full. Not only that, but there were Yankees fans everywhere…so we had to get out of there…yug.jpg

We have so many great pictures and I’m still not sure the easiest way to get the most to you…

But I have to at least show you my “Deadliest Catch”:

dc.jpg

Sunday we spent the day shopping, Fred Meyer, my new favorite store, a quick stop at WalMart, and a ton of food at Costco. We have company coming so soon…

New Adventures

These pictures are all at the Seattle Art Museum Olympia Sculpture Park, 9 acres by the water of running trails and crazy art that we explored today.

sam1.jpg sam2.jpg sam3.jpg

water.jpg

Then we went to the Hiram Chittenden Locks and Botanical Gardens. Watching the locks in action was amazing. The boat by itself is in the small lock, which puts a boat through in 8 minutes. In the large lock, they cramp all the boats in at once and get them through. You can walk all around the water, stand on the locks, and there’s even a salmon run there to see too.
locks.jpg locks2.jpg

More oysters!

oy.jpg

For those of you curious, it’s only really rained one day since we’ve gotten here, and that was yesterday. It was wet for about two hours then cleared up. We were actually able to go out and made some new friends that we’re looking forward to exploring the city with.

Per Request

Here is the giant post of the most recent adventures in pictures. I’m most excited today because we went to the Downtown Seattle Library today and took a tour. I got a library card, something I don’t think I’ve had since I was in middle school. It was a riot. It’s a beautiful place:

library.jpg lib2.jpg
I’m pretty excited about spending some time there.

That’s Qwest and Safeco from Highway 99 into town

.safecoin.jpg dance.jpg dance2.jpg

That’s Safeco inside, you can see we spared no expense on seats. The guys that were raking dropped them and did a hilarious dance. I got the pic of the big screen right when the Red Sox ad popped up, woohoo. The guys were old(!) and it was adorable. It was a pretty good crowd and the Mariners also beat the Royals, yay!

This is Alki Beach, west of the city, with a great view.

Here are two very different types of fish at the Pike’s Market Anniversary Celebration:

And last but not least, how about every state border we crossed:
