Books

I’ve been reading quite a bit to get myself ready for the writing. I figure that’s a good place to start. I can copy get inspired.

First I read The Dissident. It’s a new novel about a student from China in LA. There was very little character development, but over all the story was decent. Then I read The Glass Castle. I honestly did not realize until I had finished this book that it was a memoir. While pulling up these links on Amazon, I realized I overpaid at Barnes and Noble and I’ll be ordering books online from now on! I’m also trying to decide if I should put any of mine for sale. I’ve got maybe 60 books that I’ve decided not to keep because of overflowing bookshelves.

Next I’m starting Truman Capote’s In Cold Blood. I also have the novel The Emperor’s Children to read before I start going through the writing/publishing books that I bought before NaNoWriMo starts (No Plot? No Problem! and Get Published!).

Loves Musty Paper

I went through the big tub of “Writing Things” this weekend. I have maybe 100 sheets of paper, some full, some a sentence or two I thought was catchy. I had boxed it all up for a later time, and now is that time. I’ve got ideas for this book, and that’s exciting. For the first time this month, I feel headed in the right direction. I’ve read maybe 4 novels this past week.

I have to laugh. I actually have a file that I titled “I write like a rock star”.

I’m pretty sure that ego and a plot are all you need for a novel, so I’m halfway there.

Bad News

What do you get when you sign up for something that, I don’t know, approximately 75,000 people will be doing this year? ME READING THE MESSAGE BOARD. If I don’t finish tonight, so help me, I’ll be there everyday and not here and also NOT WRITING. I already have a headache, I’m totally confused, and feel compelled for no reason other than forum poster signatures to rush out and purchase cases of Red Bull.

I’ll be pouring myself a glass of wine and desperately trying to come up with a book plot tonight.

(Yes, this is because everyone else has a poster on their blog today)

Ready To Write

Now, don’t go thinking that I have an idea or plot or main character or anything…that’s all secondary. I now have a DESK! I’ve never, I’m pretty excited about it. It’s just the right size and fits in the bedroom so I’m not bothering anyone else who works from home in this house.

Got my laptop on it, moved over my fancy speakers, put some “How to write a book” books out, how can great things not happen?

November

As you may have heard- or read – me mention, I’m going to compete (technically, not a competition) in National Novel Writing Month. Little would you know from reading this travesty of a blog, in my dreams I am a published author. So, what better way to get the creative juices flowing then a contest (non-competitive though it is) that challenges me to just simply finish 50,000 words of something that doesn’t even have to be good, or get published?

I know, you’re thrilled. Coming soon: A month of blogging about writer’s block. It’s getting closer…

Anyone want to join me?
